David Ferrer
Or Gaston Gaudio? More prize money and more evenly weighted career in terms of success Or less money but a GS win and short peak performance time |

If it was 100,000 bucks and a Slam vs. the 14 million Ferrer made, I'd take the 14M.
But in the end, Gaudio won 6 million bucks and a Slam. I'd be settled for life with 6 million USD. I wouldn't need the other 8 million bucks. I'd take Gaudio's career. Slam trumps it all.

Gaudio by far.
Ferrer doesn't even have a slam final or a M1000 to compensate for a Roland Garros title.

If the question was, "Whose game would you prefer?", I'd opt for Gaudio most days of the week. But Ferrer is in the middle of his fourth season in the elite, and he's a multi-surface threat. Gaudio, meanwhile, often looked like a challenger player outside of claycourts; he also won a mere 12 matches against top 10 players, whilst Ferrer has won 38 of 109. When it comes to going deep in tournaments and asking questions of the best guys week in, week out, Ferrer's consistency dwarfs Gaudio's easily.

I love David Ferrer's game, and his tenaciousness. I play a similar style as him, so I relate better. That being said, I would rather win a Slam and have a short career like Gaudio than a long consistant career like Ferrer.
20 years from now, Gaston Gaudio will still be a French Open champion and securely in the history books. However, when someone randomly looks back and sees Ferrer's name in the old rankings, they won't see anything distinguishable to show that he was better than Gaudio in comparison. Here's a similar example from the 80s: Pat Cash or Brad Gilbert's career? Gilbert won 20 titles and almost $6 million. Cash won just 7 titles and $1.9 million, but has the Wimbledon title from '87. Even though I like Gilbert more as a person, I'd take Cash's Wimbledon title instead. The only reason anyone even knows who Gilbert is today is because of his coaching and TV work. |

Gaudio. Ferrer is better but Gaudio peaked at the right time. Ferrer doesnt even have a Masters title or anything in the same stratosphere as a slam title.

David Ferrer for sure. I care about a tangible difference in lifestyle for myself and my family, not how some historian views something ultimately as frivolous as a tennis career.
An extra $8 million goes a long way to helping your wealth snowball into a nice nest egg for your descendants. |

Gaudio has achieved more. But I'd like to be David Ferrer more. I would enjoy playing tennis at a high level for a long time. Same way I'd pick Roddick's over Hewitt's or Safin's, even though they were imo more succesful.

I would also like you to argue for why dependents should not be cared for from the estate of the deceased. If so, where do you suppose the money to pay for an orphan's food, housing and education should come from? In other words, why should the government appropriate all the wealth rightfully owned by someone rather than let them give it to whoever they want? |
