gamma X-2

hey i wanted to get everyones opinion on the gamma x-2. what are ya'll experiences with this machine?
also how do you clamp the first set of strings when you start? (in other words what is the first step when you created the loop on the head and pulled it throught, where do you clamp it??)

if you go to Gamma Sports @ www.gammasports.com and look under stringing machines, you can find a copy of the X-2 manual in PDF format. you can see how to start stringing a racquet.

It is a simple drop weight similar to several on the market (Klippermate). Several members on the board have used on for years. Many of use started with something similar and quickly upgrade for speed, convience, and extra features.

It will work, and you will get decent results. Your first racket might take a couple of hours, but you will get down to an hour with a little experience...The stringer will come with instructions.

For under $150 you get a very basic machine. No bells or whistles...

if your budget is around $150 and you want a machine with good support behind it, this is definitely a machine to consider.

i ordered the x-2 last week and just got it yesterday. i've never strung a racquet before and didn't have any problems stringing my first one. it was a tedious process and ended up taking about 90 minutes. but i think i can probably cut that time in half as i do more. if you want to see how to use flying clamps, check out the video for the silent partner e.stringer on their website. i watched that a few times before getting started and it helped to understand the whole clamping process.

The flying clamps start to get annoying after a while. They are quite bulky and can be difficult to work with, especially near the top of the racket and throat near the mounting. But for $140 or whatever it cost, it comes with $100 of decent string and is a good way to learn the basics. It takes me 45 minutes to an hour start to finish to do a racket, and I don't think I'll get that much quicker at this point.

I know this sounds doubtful, but according to amazon.com's x-2 listing:

"Gammas entry level machine, with the more economical composite floating string clamps. Can be upgraded to a fixed clamp system in the future".

Anyone know the details of this upgrade? Sure looks like you'd have to replace the whole turntable assembly to essentially make it into another Gamma drop-weight model.

I have had the Gamma X-2 for amout a month and have strung my racquet on it 4 times. I think it is a solid, no frills machine. The clamps are a bit bulky, but I found them adequate. The drop weight ratchet mechanism works nicely. I can string my racquet in about 40-45 minutes. Time is not that big of a factor to me because I only string 1 racquet per week or so. I feel that the finished product is as good as I could get from a more expensive stringer.
If you want a stringer to do a couple jobs a week or less i think this is a great purchase. If you are going to be stringing racquets daily get a nicer machine...

we don't promote the X-2 as being upgradable. It could be but by the time you would by the whole turntable and mounting system it would be cheaper to buy a new machine.

Why not consider the Klippermate? Very different (and in my opinion, nicer) clamps. . . I've got an ATS/Gamma clamp and also find it awkward.

OK, Now I got my X-2. Took it out of the box and set it up. It is one solid piece of equipment for the price. I'm going to choose to string a racquet we no longer use (my wife's old Head Pure-Competition) for practice, using some old string (Wilson Hamertec 18 g) - this all for practice. Trouble is, where do I get the string pattern for the Head Pure Competition racquet? For that matter where do I get string patterns for racquets in general. Can anyone help here?

Congrats on your new stringer! One of the best places to get string patterns is
s t r i n g f o r u m dot net. Look on the left side of the home page under string pattens. At the bottom of that section of the site are links to the manufacturers websites string pattern sections and also to Klippermate's site.

Thanks for the quick clarification. YOu might want to get the folks at Amazon to update their listing. The last thing you need is bad publicity from misled customers.

Thanks Gaines. I went to s t r i n g f o r u m dot net and got directed to the Head web page and managed to find a pattern for the Pure Competition but it was't quite readable and also differed from common usage - C rather than X for "cross" and B (for base) rather than T for throat, and they used T (top) rather than H for head.

I ended up going to the Silent Partner web site and got a far more readable pattern for this racquet.
