Default Difficult year end discussions

Djokovic is most likely to be number 1 at the end of the year (and I am a Federer fan saying this) - but what if he doesn't win the WTF and Federer or Murray does. In fact what if he gets to number one simply because he gets to finals at Shanghai and Paris and doesn't win them or the WTF and Murray wins.

Then how many tournaments would Djokovic have won this year? 4? Would he deserve to be number 1 for the year?

not sure why another thread on this topic. there are 2 of them already going.

However, whoever wins more points is a deserving #1. Rankings are more about consistency than just pure winning. this is not WTA. so you need to focus on a big picture and look at all tournaments played during 52 weeks.

He won a major this year plus other big titles. He deserves it.

Yeah let's count points only for the win in finals, not for the loss in final or SF, QF

Murray won 6 ATP titles in 2009 and ended the year as #4.

In fact Murray (6), Nadal (5) and Djokovic (5) each won more titles than Federer (4) that year.

Djokovic will deserve it regardless. 3 slam finals...and winning one of them.

Roger has an outside chance to be World Number 1....and if he does take it then....well deserved.

It won't be like Nadal in 2010 who takes the Number one Ranking with 1 slam....while Federer holds 2 Slams and 1 final.

Nadal won 3 slams in 2010. That's why he ended up as #1. I don't know where you were going with your comment. Typo, perhaps?

So wozniacki was a deserving #1 for two years, is that what you're saying? Im not comparing woz to nole, but a player doesnt just deserve the top spot for the points he/she gains, its more about where you gain them, and if you win majors.

Djokovic has 1 Slam this year (AO) and 2 finals (FO and USO).

you can not compare the ATP with the WTA at all. The WTA is just a big mess, so your Woz argument is very weak. I refuse to watch all of that screaming going on and the WTA is NOT tennis. Give me back Evert/Navratilova, Seles/Graf and we'll talk.

We are talking about 4 top guys who managed to win slams, masters plus other big tournaments this year. Not even close to Princess Serena or Clijsters who hardly play any other tournaments except slams. I won't buy their 'injury problems', ever as it's all just faking and being spoiled.

Nadal got the Number one ranking when he won the French Open....while Federer held more slams.

Nadal did do justice by ending the year with 3 slams.

Right now Novak has the better slam year than the rest. It improbable that he would not end Number one.

If Federer manages it in the end....it would be sim to Nadal 2010 French Open.

How did you draw that conclusion, if each of the Big Four has one each ...?

This discussion got me thinking that if Nadal had not missed the BH DTL and won the AO then how easy it would have been for Federer to get the YE No 1

Not very. He'd still be trailing by ~700 points by my calculation.
