Well, looking at it objectively, it can't be anyone else.

He could conceivably win it every year for the next 3 or 4 years, barring injury. He operates on a whole other plane to everyone else.

And that's coming from someone who's not really a fan of Barcelona football club.

Well looking back at how many goals he scored during the last season it has to be Messi. I would certainly pick him.

But given the fact that Barca didn't win anything special during the last season I doubt it will be him.

Unfortunately I think it will be Andres Iniesta who won Euro2012 with Spain and was selected as the best player of the tournament.

Not saying he's not a great player but nowhere in the same league as Messi and Ronaldo.

Actually that's a good point. They may choose to 'share it out' a bit, as opposed to simply giving it to the best player.

So perhaps Iniesta or Xavi will get it due to their national team success. But yes, it's a no-brainer; neither have had a better year than Messi in terms of the football they've produced.

Although it seems likely they'll allow for an exception this year (in light of undeniable production of Messi / CR7), I would have assumed this would have been the case and it would go to a Spanish national player.

Ronaldo won La Liga and took Portugal to the semi of the Euro pretty much with his own feet and top scored

Messi didn't win anything of note, even though he scored a lot of goals.

Those saying that messi should win because he scored the most goals should remember Ronaldo scored more last season, and didn't win the best player award.

No, it's his overall level of play that makes him the player of the year, not just his goals.

But I suppose it would get a bit boring giving it to the same player every year.

I agree, the things you help your team achieve are extremely important.

I'd give it to Iniesta for being amazing, and winning the Euro's, or Ronaldo for winning La Liga and he was excellent at the Euro's.

As has been noted by various pundits, based on the team achievement benchmark then surely the award should go to Torres!

I'll go with that!

For the goal against Barcelona alone, he more than deserves it!

I think it's a bit harsh on Cech if i'm honest. He played incredibly well against Barcelona, in the second leg especially. The second half they just sent a barrage his way and he stopped everything. In the final he made some even better saves, plus the Robben penalty.. oh and his performance in the penalty shootout was one of the best seen.

There's also the save he made against Liverpool in the FA Cup final, people were putting it up there with some of he best of all time. The touch onto the woodwork to deny them at the end was fantastic.

Without him, Chelsea probably wouldn't of won the double last year. Bit harsh on him not to get a mention I think.

Torres sucked during 90% of the last season. Handing Torres the Ballon D'or would be a huge scandal.
Lol but I get your point, scoring a goal in the UEFA CL final and winning the whole thing along with the Spanish success at EURO2012.
But he himself didn't do too much.

It will probably be a close one between Ronaldo and Iniesta.

Unfortunately? Iniesta's better than Zidane ever was.

LOL, no. Iniesta is a fantastic player but Zidane is a god..

ON TOPIC: Messi is something else. He is as superior to the rest of the players as JesusFed was in 2004-2007. He should win this Ballon D' or and probably the next two also if he doesn't get injured badly cause he's only 25 and is astonishingly consistent.

Nobody gives a sh*t.

Seriously, how many titles did they win this year. He failed to win either a Primera Division or a CL title this year, even though his team is clearly the most talented.

The years before, the argument for him was strong because they either won both the CL and league title or at least one. Last season, they didn't win either. The only way he wins the next 3 or 4 years if his fangirls were responsible for the election.

Grow up.

I'm trying to show my view of Messi being player of the year isn't a biased one, it's an objective one.

And I don't quite understand the link between player of the year and team trophies. It's true the best team in Spain last season was Real Madrid, but Ronaldo's performance levels still didn't match Messi's IMO.

So, in a literal sense, it's a reasonable view to consider Messi player of the year.

If there was an award for team of the year, then it would be different...
