Upright is definitely the better option. I find recumbent bikes to be extremely awkward and uncomfortable, especially when trying to get a good workout. You simply cannot get into a good rhythm unless you have your weight over the pedals. Recumbent is only good if you want to sit back and read a magazine while pretending to exercise.

On a board where nearly every poster owns dozens of racquets, buy both. Then get a trainer for your road bike. And a bike for spinning. Dump your furniture, replace with bikes. Ride and post. Seriously
