Paes and Bhupathi will retire soon so and after the end of that era I think we will have a big void in the doubles arena. Bopanna might do reasonably well with the right partner.
In singles, I am not too hopeful about Somdev - even in his best year he could only get his ranking into the 60s. At best I see a 500 win in his future. He's a bit of a poor man's Nishikori except Nishikori has age on his side (he's only 22 while Somdev is 27) and more powerful ground strokes. Yuki Bhambri hasn't beaten any high ranked players to my recollection but he still has time to mature, he's only 20. Hoping he can break into the top 100 in 2013. Anyone else out there? On the women's side? |

Bambri reminds me of a Djokovic Clone....suprised he hasn't made inruns based on his hype.

What ever happened to Sania Mirza? She seemed very promising a year or two ago. Haven't heard much about her recently. Is she injured?

The problem with Indian athletes is that as soon as they achieve anything remotely significant, the media hypes them , they get millions in ads and sponsorships and then their dedication to the sport seems to be affected. Of course it must be said that we need more world class tennis facilities in India and really athletes who want to make it are forced to train abroad.

No Indian players are going to break through in singles any time soon, but there's some hope for doubles.

Tennis requires a lot of attention and dedication from their said country, and as far as I know India doesn't put as much attention into tennis as other countries. Say Brazil or Spain.

Many are not willing to sacrifice education as the fallback options are very few without a college education. It is also not possible to do home-schooling.

It amazes me how bad india is in sports considering how large and economically booming that country is.
they are still solid in cricket but even in hockey which was huge there they are not a top country anymore. and when we are talking major sports like track and field, soccer, swimming, basketball, volleyball, baseball... they are really not good for such a large country. |

Somdev Devvarman is a great player (made R4 at Indian Wells a few years ago, a couple of ATP 250 finals) but the likelihood of him winning an ATP 500 event is very limited indeed.

Unlike Swedish tennis which in non-existent, the future of Indian tennis is really good. I mean if someone like Monfed could flat out say Nadal is talentless, he must be surrounded by amazing talents in Bangalore.
