Tsonga and Gasquet looks pretty SW to me. Also explains why shorter players copying Fed's grip is a road of hardship (me included). It's inconsistent having to always adjust wrist angle to deal with high balls and topspin kicks.

when you try to maximize movements and mobility a small grip change will necessitate changes in almost all aspects of the body. a grip will decide many things even to the style of game as you go higher up in performance.

vast majority of rec players who use SW will say Fed uses SW when they see Fed's photo at contact point if they don't know that he uses E. same as all those other players. as I said it's not easy at all to tell SW from E at the moment of contact from a photo. stance, balance, swing path, and ball trajectory tell the grip quite accurately.

Extreme eastern is a lot different than eastern. You can get a lot more spin with that grip.

Agreed. Just that small change really improve one's ability to pull the racquet up and get more topspin. You can get great topspin with an E grip, but it is harder to do.

Interestingly, my grip as naturally been shifting from a extreme/strong E. to almost full SW in the last few months. I've been making some tweaks to my swing and I think the grip thing has been happening because of that. I'm just going to go with it since I've been pleased with the changes.

It's actually an Aero Storm, but the two have very similar if not the same paintjobs if I can remember correctly, maybe a few colors flipped around

What's wrong with you guys? I use a continental grip on both sides. That way I never have to adjust it, be it for a drive, volley, serve, lob, drop shot, or overhead

It's Semi-western. The Knuckle is on bevel #4.

It's a bad trade off. You lose so much by at lest not switching to an eastern on the backhand groundstrokes.

If there's one single stroke that cries out for the continental grip, it's the one-handed backhand. Read the literature.

Announcers said at a tournament (the name escapes me at the moment), "Old school continental" when refering to Gasquet's forehand.

his swing is very topspin oriented instead of hitting thru the ball and his contact point is somewhat retreated compared to other eastern players. a regular eastern player trying to hit topspin with conti grip will look kinda like gasquet's FH so that commentator is not too far off but I have good reason to believe it's E or one of the variations of it.

Yeah, I honestly have no complaints with this grip. I can hit pretty much as high as I want, I can drive it at any point, or anywhere inbetween. Also, high balls aren't a problem like they would be with full eastern, and low balls aren't the problem they would be with a more western grip. On an off day it might be hard for me to get as much spin as I want, but that's all me.

Yes, if you are slicing the ball. For a topspin 1-hander you aren't going to get many people that recommend continental.

I use an eastern grip because I don't know how to hit hard with a SW grip. My shots are just loopy, spinny and slow with SW. If I hit eastern, they are flat, but significantly faster.
