Default Baghdatis (2005 Australian Open)

So we all remember Baghdatis' fantastic 2006 AO run where he lost to Fed in a 4 set final, after beating some stiff competition along the way.

However I totally forgot about his run the year before. Opposed to being unseeded, like in 2006, Marcos had to qualify. In the first round he beat fellow qualifier Federico Luzzi in 5 sets.
In the second round he beat #22 seed Ivan Ljubicic in 4.
In the third round he beat #13 seed Tommy Robredo in straight sets.
Then in the 4th round he was beaten in straights by Roger, though the third set reached a TB.

Marcos is the epitome of a flash in the pan. His 2006 season was excellent, but since 2006 Wimbledon he has played 21 slams and advanced to the 4th round only three times and a single quarter final (07 Wimbledon).

His 2012 highlights are limited to smashing 4 rackets in a row.

What is Marcos' ceiling for 2013? Top 20? He is ranked 33 now and 27 years old.

His former coach Miles mcglaghan stated the games moved on too much for Marcos.

The late Federico Luzzi. He was only 28 when he passed away, poor chap.

Perhaps he can cling onto those ephemeral moments when he still looks like a world beater, especially in his grasscourt matches with Murray this year.

i'm not sure this particular coach had a good influence on marcos' game...

i still have hope in marcos... and i'm hoping for a good 2013 !

his 2005 AO run was good, indeed (and a confirmation of his good showing against roger at the previous USO)... too bad he injured his wrist (i think ?) soon after.

Could this have been from overuse of the forkhand?

The guy has unbelievable potential but almost zero focus and/or motivation. He will always be dangerous, particularly on faster surfaces, but a consistent run through a stacked draw? Not so much.

The one match I will hold on to with positive thoughts for Marcos was the epic USO contest with 'Dre. Even in defeat, I think it was more of a positive than any subsequent victory. He's had a big win or two since but never with a good follow-up run.

Faster courts and faster balls benefited him greatly. Such compact strokes, he would have been much more dangerous in the 90s.

If they banned poly to tip the scales back to all around skill over fitness and endurance, Bags would be back in business.
