Of those players who are currently still on the tour, just 4 are multi-Slam winners. Of those 4, the time gap between their 1st and 2nd Slam titles is:
1. Federer = 6 months (2003 Wimbledon, 2004 Australian Open). 2. Hewitt = 10 months (2001 US Open, 2002 Wimbledon). 3. Nadal = 1 year (2005 French Open, 2006 French Open). 4. Djokovic = 3 years (2008 Australian Open, 2011 Australian Open). I wonder who holds the record in the Open Era for both the shortest and longest time gaps?

Edit: drat, no, his was a few months shorter than Djokovic's. As far as the shortest goes, I remember reading somewhere than no-one ever won his second slamstraight after winning the first (couldn't vouch about this, though), so Federer would be hard to beat (of course, the gap between RG and US Open is shorter than between Wimbledon and AO, but I can't think of anyone who fits the bill... That 3 year gap was definitely strange.
Granted Fed was still coming off his prime and Nadal was ramping up, but still.. you had no hint whatsoever that Djokavic was about to become a dominant player. His breakout was surprising...... almost shocking. |

yeah Safin was a long wait, good thinking.

Connors won the AO and then Wimbledon but this would have been around a 7 month gap, a bit longer than Federer's. If Del potro can win another slam he is already ast 3 year... EDIT. Silencer1 beat me to it

If Delpo wins another slam, he will have a huge gap between first and second slam.

Sanchez Vicario had 5 year gap between her 1st and 2nd slams at the 89 and 94 French Opens, a 2nd slam which would have never come to her without the help from Graf and Sanchez Vicario crazed fanatic Gunther Parche.
Mary Pierce had a slightly longer than 5 year wait between her 1st and 2nd slams at the 95 French and 2000 French Open, then did not make her next slam finals until the 2005 French and 2005 U.S Opens (losing both). Svetlana Kuznetsova also waited close to 5 years for her 2nd slam at the 2009 French Open, following her 2004 U.S Open triumph.

Sampras went from the 1990 US Open to 1993 Wimbledon, but Kuerten was longer as already mentioned.
Historically, I think it's Arthur Gore with 7 years, from 1901 Wimbledon to 1908 Wimbledon. |

Jan Kodes 1970-1971 French Open.
Sam Smith 1971 US-72 Wimbledon Nastase 72 US-73 French. Shortest I know is Connors 74 Aussie to 74 WImbledon. Vilas 77 FO thn to 77 US Open.

That's because of the timing of the slams on the schedule. Both won their 2nd slam 2 slams later.

I should have added Norman Brookes alongside Arthur Gore, as Brookes went from 1907 Wimbledon to 1914 Wimbledon.
As for the shortest, I think it's Budge Patty, who won the 1950 French Championships and 1950 Wimbledon. |
