This has been a bugbear of mine for a while, but I have a funny feeling I'm the only one who feels this way. To me, a "hot dog" is not the same as a "'tweener".
I hear the two terms bandied about interchangeably, and this lunchtime I even found folks on YouTube berating someone for calling a shot a 'tweener. By their logic, "'tweener" is some American *******ization, and those in the know always refer to such shots as "hot dogs". However, the term isn't unique to tennis, and in other sports merely refers to "performing daring stunts or ostentatious maneuvers".[source] I'd therefore put forward that the following two three shots are examples of hot dogs, even though they're not 'tweeners.
Thoughts? MDL Disclaimer: I know this is even more trivial a dispute than "what is a slam?" but it's the quiet part of the year. And I feel confident that the TTW community can successfully turn this into a 20-page trainwreck about Federer vs Nadal... |

You misheard. "Hot dog" is not "tweener," it's "weiner."

I think a good example is that even though a square is technically a rectangle, no one will have an issue if I call it a square. Unless of course they are bored and trolling a YouTube message board.

My 2 cents: A 'tweener' is a trick shot of sorts hit by a 'hot dog' (assuming the 'tweener' was not an emergency shot hit out of necessity with no other option available but simply a player showing off). So, imho the shot itself is a 'tweener' and the show-off hitting it is a "hot dog" who is "hot dogging" as in "he's a hot dog" or "he's hot dogging it".
Tweener = the shot Hot dog = basically the person hitting it My sig may help further define 'hot dog' ; ) Quote:
Federer wouldn't "hot dog" like that steroidal topspin monkey Nadal!! .... At least Rafa doesn't cry like Federer does everytime he's handed the runner-up trophy!!.... Oh yeah?..well at least Fed doesn't stall between points and pick his butt.... Drop dead!..at least Rafa isn't some prissy Queen who wears sissy boy gold outfits AND POCKETBOOKS to Wimbledon while trying to hide behind "that beard" !!!!!.... Roger is not!!...bwaaaaa!!!!

Gsicht (it's spelled "Gesicht")
Both "weiner" and "wiener" are accepted spellings, the former considered more English usage and the latter more Germanic.

You can use a tweener to hit a hot-dog, but can not hit a tweener with a hot-dog
