"'Tweener" = "hot dog" ?

This has been a bugbear of mine for a while, but I have a funny feeling I'm the only one who feels this way. To me, a "hot dog" is not the same as a "'tweener".

I hear the two terms bandied about interchangeably, and this lunchtime I even found folks on YouTube berating someone for calling a shot a 'tweener. By their logic, "'tweener" is some American *******ization, and those in the know always refer to such shots as "hot dogs".

However, the term isn't unique to tennis, and in other sports merely refers to "performing daring stunts or ostentatious maneuvers".[source] I'd therefore put forward that the following two three shots are examples of hot dogs, even though they're not 'tweeners.

• Federer's run-around down-the-line forehand vs Nalbandian
• Tipsarevic's upside-downy reverse crosscourt backhand vs Safin
• Agassi's over-the-shoulder reverse down-the-line pass vs Corretja

I think that all tweeners are hot dogs, but not all hot dogs are tweeners. I have played junior tournaments throughout the US and I have hit with a lot of college players (from multiple countries), and I have never heard the term hot dog in this context once.

I think a good example is that even though a square is technically a rectangle, no one will have an issue if I call it a square. Unless of course they are bored and trolling a YouTube message board.

My 2 cents: A 'tweener' is a trick shot of sorts hit by a 'hot dog' (assuming the 'tweener' was not an emergency shot hit out of necessity with no other option available but simply a player showing off). So, imho the shot itself is a 'tweener' and the show-off hitting it is a "hot dog" who is "hot dogging" as in "he's a hot dog" or "he's hot dogging it".

Tweener = the shot
Hot dog = basically the person hitting it
