here's a breakdown of how it will go down against a top 10 player like Tsonga.

First the profiles
============
4.5 Player 1 = Big first serve 100-110mph with a 50% chance, big forehand , average backhand, average volley.
4.5 Player 2 = Medium first serve 75mph-85mph with 80% chance, medium forehand, average backhand, strong volley.
Tsonga = Ranked #8 in world.

Tie break begins
============

1st point:
Player 2 serves to Tsonga, Player 1 at net. First serve misses, second serve in at 75mph to Tsonga backhand. Tsonga runs around his backhand and hammers one straight back at Player 2 with tons of spin for a winner.
Score 1-0

2nd point:
Tsonga serves to Player 1. Service Winner.
Score 2-0

3rd point:
Tsonga serves to Player 2. Huge serve to Player 2 backhand. Player 2 pops back ball and Tsonga puts it away with ease.
Score 3-0

4th point:
Player 1 serves a first-serve in at 105mph . Tsonga blocks it back and it comes back quick! Player 2 tries to poach it but can't get a good enough volley. Tsonga hits a vicious forehand to Player 1 who is standing scared back at the baseline. Player 1 tries to reach for the shot but only frames it.
Score 4-0

5th point:
Player 1 serves first serve in net, and follows up with a double fault in an attempt to get a decent serve in. Pressure is on now.
Score 5-0

6th point:
At this point both Player 1 and Player 2 are standing at the base line scared of Tsonga's vicious groundstrokes drilling them. Tsonga serves to Player 1, Ace.
Score 6-0

7th point:
Tsonga serves to Player 2, Ace. Tiebreak over!
Score 7-0

I guess it depends on how often you play that level of guy as well! I've played tie-breaks against challenger and future level guys and taken points off them in tiebreaks before!

Anyone with a decent serve and a good-enough 1-2 combination would probably win one against Nadal at the moment, probably with a 7-4 or 7-5 scoreline.

Actually know a strong 4.5 who paid a charity donation of several thousand dollars to play a set with McEnroe. Mac only lost two points the entire set. This was about five years ago.

If I had such funds, that would be an experience of a life time.

-An ATP Pro normally destroys 16-18 y.o Jrs

-a 16-18 y.o Jr normally destroys 6.0 (I have seen in my club)

-a 6.0 destroys 5.0 players

Only now I got to the 4.5 level and somebody still thinks that an ATP Pro would lose a point to a 4.5 ??

Yeah but Fed owns Davydenko, who in turn owns Nadal who in turn, owns Federer. Things aren't always transitive in the world of tennis.

I watched the top Georgia Tech singles player play against 300-400 ranked player Nikita Kryonos in the finals of the USTA national mens open at the NTC in december. I've never saw someone put out as much effort into 2 sets and barely win 2 games. The pro was jut on cruise control, but the level was insanely high.

Mac was referring to 5.0 players as weekend hackers.

Some people really have no concept of level differentials at the higher levels
Here in San Diego a 5.0 is a pretty freakin' good player. Yes, a pro would disembowel him, but that doesn't mean he's not a good player. There are not a lot of stroke deficiencies at this level, and the strokes are hard, have spin, and are effective.

If the Mac quote is accurate, then as usual Mac should just stick with hitting the ball. He's so good at that, even in his 50's. And of course he would completely kill any 5.0 player. But that doesn't make them weekend hackers. A 5.0 can beat almost any person that claims to play tennis. John, hit the ball, don't talk.

It's funny how these quotes get mangled. I was watching a tournament with Mac and somebody announcing, maybe Bill Macatee or somebody, and Mac said, "So I hear you're quite the weekend hacker. What are you, a 5.0?" I then posted his quote on TT, you can go back and find the thread if you've got nothing better to do. Now that can be taken many different ways, but Mac did not say "A 5.0 is a weekend hacker." Of course in some sense, a 5.0 is a hacker. In others, not. But Mac did not say that.
