Moving to Raleigh

Hi all,

Anybody on the boards play in the Raleigh/Cary area? I'll be moving to the area soon and was hoping to find out where the best places to play are. Is Cary Tennis Park worth joining?

Cary Tennis Park is a nice public facility. You can pay by the session a few times, then see if you like it enough to pay for a membership. It's all hard courts, but they are the nicest public courts in the area. Shaded benches and dividers between every court. Lights. Pro-shop, showers, ball machine rentals, etc. Good pro staff there.

There are several other traditional country clubs in Cary, notably MacGregor Downs and Preston. Preston has golf, too.

Raleigh Racquet Club is primarily a tennis club that has the only indoor courts in the area. There is a sign up fee and a membership fee. The majority of the courts are clay. There is also a swimming pool and restaurant. If you want to play tennis year-round, that's the place to go.

Seven Oaks is a tennis and swim club. Mostly clay courts. Big family pool with slides and such.

North Hills is a tennis and swim club, with a much nicer restaurant and club house than the other tennis clubs. Many clay courts. Very family oriented; in a nice neighborhood.

More traditional country clubs are Northridge and the Carolina Country Club. Both have golf, too.

If you want to meet a lot of tennis players in Raleigh before you join any private club, go to Millbrook Exchange Park. This is a municipal operation. They have a lot of tennis courts, a pro-shop, and singles and doubles ladders that you can join. By doing that, you can find a lot of other players and public courts that are all over Raleigh. You should also be able to find USTA teams there.

there is a whole lot of usta and wtt league activity in Raleigh/Cary/Durham

a lot of the more active players play in two or three of those leagues so a lot of the players know or know of each other.

What level you play at?

I'm in Clayton, and grew up playing a good bit at Millbrook Exchange Park. They had/have a dedicated doubles court where winner stays on and takes all comers. Great idea, in my opinion.

Great league tennis, as well. I play on a couple of Clayton teams, and we play all the Wake County folks.

I'm a 3.5 currently.
