Default A possible cure?

A good friend of mine I string for loves the Wilson 99S. I have mentioned him more than a few times in some of my posts. He loves his 99S's, but he hates (or should I hated) the lack of string life.

The first thing I did was make him a deal. I had tried several strings with him and in desperation, I threw some old poly I had an unbelievable quantity of, Volkl V-Rex 1.27. He loved it and since I wasn't exactly killing with it, I let him pay me a flat rate every month for an unlimited number of string jobs; with one caveat. He was just to give me a thumbs up or down and I would handle the particulars of how it was strung.

I consulted with a very knowledgeable source, Drakulie, on the situation. Drakulie offered two things 1) increase gauge 2) lower tension. The first wasn't an option, so I got sneaky with the 2nd. I hit with him and since our frames are identical, I let him hit with mine. He insisted on stringing his in the middle, 58 and mine were strung at 49/47.

In the immortal words of Gomer Pyle, "Surprise, surprise, surprise...". I didn't tell him what my tension was, only that I watned him to try my racquet as it was strung with something different. He said it played good. I asked him if he could tell any real difference and he said "No".

Long story short, I've taken him slowly from 58 to 50 and he's seen an increase in string life from two sets to six sets without any hit in playability.

I will probably leave him at 50, but he's considerably happier with this frames now.

Great story as always Rabbit! What do you actually fancy about the 99S, especially coming from (years before) classic Volkl rackets?

thanks...

I'm glad to have helped him out!

The frame has more zip, serves great and is pretty dadgum handy around the net. It plays much softer than its specs. Basically, I have always loved an open string pattern and this frame fits the bill.
