Default Measuring the 40'

So what's the preferred and quickest way to get 40' off the real?

I actually measure with my arms, I found that from the tip of my left hand to my right arm pit is exactly 3 feet. Takes me 13 pulls with that length to get 39 feet, about 15 seconds.

I also measure with my arm. If I look straight ahead & hold the string between index finger & thumb, extend my arm to the right, it is 3' to my chin. YMMV

Cheers,

What's wrong with using a yard stick?

Then there is no guessing, before cutting your string, especially if you are doing a 2 piece.

Some of these suggestions are hilarious

Here's what you do: buy a set of string that is 40 feet. Keep it. Bam, there you go. If you want to string two piece, cut it in half and keep one of the halves. Just pull off that amount from the reel and you're good to go. I have a half-set of Gosen OGSM 17 that I've been using for years.

Arm length is the quickest and easiest way to go. To save even more time I use my whole wingspan which is 73", pretty much six feet. I do that just six times plus one that goes only halfway meeting at my sternum and I have got 39-40 feet ready to go.

+1

My method: 1 piece - 8 head to throat measures and 9.5 widths measure at the longest points, then double the combined lengths for a 16x19 frame. The long way is to measure 16 mains and 19 crosses.

I don't get why you need to measure 40 feet exactly. Most of the time you'll have 5 to 6 feet of cutoff. Reels will produce 18-20 sets, 17 sets if you cut 40 at a time.

The only reels i keep are cheap stuff (which i also play with), gosen and the like, so i just don't care so long as i don't come up short.

I measured my wingspan to be about 5.5 feet and go from there. I'll look up a pattern/length and adjust accordingly, but never use an actual tape/ruler or what have ya. Did that once and came up with my wingspan. I know about what a foot is if i need to adjust.

Individual sets are simple, especially since most are at least abit longer than advertised anyhow.

So you measure 160 times? I would be likely to loose count.
