I just thought I would mention that Tomic put Australia through into yet another world group playoff in Uzbekistan.

Nobody in Australia has mentioned it on the news or anything, though, wouldn't want to give the kid any positive publicity or anything.

No doubt it would have been the lead story if he had lost..

Hell, it was the lead story against Germany last year when he was the only one that won a singles rubber and they STILL rubbished him when all Hewitt had to do was beat the guy Tomic had already beaten easily..

journalists... (and Australians in general, really)

Nice post, Timbo.

Rafter should lay off the attacks on Tomic for a while. He is 10-2 in DC matches.

Tomic can be a future #1 if he matures and dedicates himself to being a champion, instead of just a really good tennis player, content with a very good income.

In Rafter's defence, he said some really nice things about Tomic's efforts over the weekend :

Now if he can show commitment and care throughout the rest of the season instead of picking and choosing then it would help him a lot.

I agree that he is an easy target for criticism in DC when he won the matches he was supposed to while Hewitt came up short against Wawrinka in 11, Stebe in 12, yet nothing was said of that by Rafter or the press.

I was nearly useless in my early 20s. Tough to motivate kids like this. Hopefully, things will work out for the kid. He's one of the more enjoyable players to watch right now (when his head is right). I'd like to see him contesting for titles against the best soon.

I think a lot of the trouble with Tomic is the environment he's been brought up in. Fast cars, partying, big mansions have previously taken priority over working hard to be the best he can be. Theres only so much that can be attributed to himself at his age. I think they way he has been brought up by his father has been majorly detrimental. The way he carried on when Tomic tried to get away from the cops is a good example of this.

Damir Dokic, John Tomic - same branding. They are headcases.

Yeah, and unfortunetly the Davis Cup got barely a mention over here at all in the newspapers. It wasn't even on tv. The only way of following the scores was through twitter. If Tomic got smashed, walked out of the stadium and punched Pat Rafter in the face you wouldnt have heard about it. The media is just hellbent of squeezing every drop of blood out of a stone during football season - everything else is completly forgetten. The only time tennis is mentioned is during the Aussie Open and maybe an article or two for Wimbledon. Such a rag is the Australian media that the installation of a water fountain that delivers sparkling water gets precedence over the North Korea crisis. I kid you not.

No chance. Guys like him never have the consistency in results to top the game. He would need to change so much of his game so as to basically make him a different player in order to be the top player.

They just played doubles in Miami together -- but lost in straights sets to Melo/Dodig )

He's still very young and the talent base is there, he can grow into becoming a great champion. Of course, he may not too. But I see the potential there for him to be something special. IMHO

For what it is worth : pretty well every coach that either had Bernard in squad or individual work has attested to his high skill level.

Talent will only get you say far, look at how hard Djokovic, Murray, Federer & even Nadal have worked. I say even Nadal because he had an amazing transition from juniors to ATP top 20.

We can argue what making it means but Tomic is around there, whether he breaks through top 20 or even top 10 will be up to him.
Staying there is even harder.

News from a couple of tennis reporters on twitter...

Quote:
John Tomic allegedly arrested 3 days ago in Madrid 4 head butting/breaking nose/knocking out Bernie's French hitting partner.

ATP officially confirms to me there was an incident and they are investigating

No, he's not and I do hope Tomic escapes whatever is going on in that relationship. If the incident played as has been reported, his father will probably be banned, as others before him.

W.P good....Bernard needs a new coach, a new attitude...this guy thinks he's rebellious Agassi though without the slams or a top ten placing before 20....someone will straighten him out...like a Brad Gilbert

it has the potential to be the best thing that ever happened for Tomic.

and the worst..

it's a miracle he even won 5 games against Stepanek in the circumstances, though

Tomic is just another good player without a head on his shoulders. He'll go the way of Monfils soon enough. There have been lots of guys come and go who think and act exactly like he is.

"... best ever to play the game." Jeez.

There's only one guy without a major who is allowed to even utter that sentence. Marcelo Rios. For those of us who watched him... we know that he's probably the only guy who could have potentially lived up to that statement.

Wow. o.0

That sounds pretty bad. In New Zealand we get a few articles for each grand slam and sizeable articles on the two tournaments.
