The very thought of it must make him feel sick let alone a virus.
Nadal might pretend that he's indifferent to winning and losing and that he "accepts losing with the same calm as winning" but it's very obvious that winning is everything to him just as it should be for a legendary player. So if he comes back and is getting blasted off the court, it could be damaging to him at least until clay season hits. I think he'll probably hope to get onto clay as his comeback.

Clay it will likely be.

I've never heard of Federer planning to withdraw from any tournaments just because he thinks he will not win it or have a small chance to win it. He just play, however the draw is like and however he feels about his confidence or his chance of winning.

Now Rafa thinks that he might not play AO because he thinks he will not have a chance of winning it? or because his knee won't be in good condition during AO???

That is ridiculous.

What a coward.

Federer keeps on playing no matter big or small his chance of winning. He never pulls out of Roland Garros, so why Rafa pull out of any other grand slam but not Roland Garros??? Rafa is seriously a coward.

How low of you to post something like this.

Anyway, when Federer has an injury anywhere close to the seriousness of the ones Rafa has had, then we'd know what he would do and if he would be a coward according to people like you.

But you only know that because he retired right?

No one saw him collapse on the court clasping his knee/ankle unable to walk off the court. Everytime an injury has been cited as a reason after a loss, he had been playing flawlessly up to the loss.

So why are people wrong in questioning his intent?

Ummm...Federer played through the mono, so that point works against your argument.

Stomach virus/mono does not prevent you from playing tennis. It does make you less effective though.

The real reason Rafa withdrew is that the stomach virus made his low chances of winning even lower. Not because it prevents him from playing tennis.

Clarky was being sarcastic there to counter another poster who seemed to have no idea why a stomach virus would affect someone when playing tennis. As such don't take it seriously. The funnier part was the user who posted about the stomach virus.
