How do you get the feel of brushing up on the single backhand?
I can easily do it on the forehand side but when I try it on my backhand, I usually hit it long and too flat? Thanks |

I think it's important to get the forward component of the swing for a one-hander going VERY early, especially in comparison with a forehand. The one-handed backhand depends on more mechanical synchronization than a forehand, so if it's rushed, it's going to break down or at least lose a lot of its energy.
In a practice setting, be very deliberate with getting loaded up onto that front foot before its time to release through contact so that you can let your stroke unwind completely. When I want really good topspin on that stroke, I try to "level" myself with the incoming ball so that the back of my upper arm (my tricep) is at about the height of the ball with my racquet back in its set position. If I release through contact from there, I'll get a nice ascending swing path for really good topspin. Avoid the rush - start that swing good 'n early to get your best racquet speed with an accurate move through the ball. |

Like learning to walk before you learn to run.....
Start basic direct takeback, short and low. Swing thru with a high finish. Don't start out copying Almagro/Gasquet, instead start out McEnroe. |
