I was busy over the holiday season, must've missed the reasons given.
Anyone care to shed some light? |

OP, did you follow tennis in 2009 and 2012? Those are the only 2 years Nadal made the AO final. He can't play on this suicidal surface for 7 rounds and survive the year. Slow hardcourts, long rallies, and 5-6 hour matches? You think its a good idea for Nadal to play here? I hope he never plays it again.

I got a feeling he's tried to have a hit or two on hardcourts during this layoff and his knee does not respond well. Committing to 3 clay tourneys as "preparation" for IW and Miami kind of sends the signal that he is not itching to win big hardcourt titles....or play much hardcourt tennis at all.

And he has succeeded. |

Aussies are very friendly and relaxed but Rafa prefers to Chile out on the dirt.

a) the surface difference b) after a long layoff, he didn't want to start with something as intense as a Slam c) the entirety of South America wants to see him, so I imagine they're paying a fortune (but still not more than Roger got for his S. American exhos, which totaled something around $12 million)

To please his Chilean fans, nothing else
Pretty logical really. Coming back on hc never seemed like a good idea. Good idea to come back on clay an in a small tournament. For a while before he actually withdrew from the AO it was clear he might not play it and that if he didn't he would maybe play Chile.
