Last year's AO was pretty kickass. Followed closely by '09.

2007

Federer and Gonzo were basically flattening everyone. Roddick and Nadal were summarily dispatched just for lulz.

That was the last Grand Slam final in which both players had a one-handed backhand. After that, the two-handers took over, and tennis became a bit uglier, a bit more boring, a bit more stupid.

I'd say either the 2006 or 2007 one.

2012 ws great. Just a random hypothetical. If Fed's super draw all come through and he wins it, 2013 will certainly go down as one of the best

2011 was the worst awful final, and two semi's which were either anti-climatic or boring.

I'd say the Fed's 2007 or 2012 was good.

Love the Oz Open.

I liked the one with Becker beating Chang in the final. 1996, I think it was.

Loved the one with Baghdatis making the run to the final. How many clutch second serves did he fire that second week?

Oh, and both times Safin got to the final. One amazing late-night 5 setter over RF, then he took apart Hewitt...the other when he beat everyone on the way to the final, losing to RF.

I liked the one with Laver presenting the trophy to RF.

Wilander over Cash stands out, too. Also I remember the year Mac got defaulted.

Moya in 97 beating everyone but Sampras.

And the year Becker beat Lendl. That was big.

2009.

The semis and the final were great!! I liked 2007 as well, Gonzo was on fire that year. The match against Haas was one of the best performances I have ever seen.

It`s tough to point out an AO that stands out but there are some AO moments that are to be remembered.Agassi beating Sampras in a classic semi,Safin beating Federer in a thriller and going all the way,Federer and Gonzo playing amazing all the way to the finals,Baghdatis on his amazing run,Tsonga beating Murray in R1,then gets to semis and destroys Nadal, longest tennis day which ends in the morning with Hewitt`s victory against Baghdatis and so on.

2005, even tho fed didnt win it, I have some faves.

1) fed's sonic boom fh he hit against Haas
2) fed destroying agassi
3) hewitt owning roddick once again
4) The insane crazy semi between Fed and Safin. Epic classic.
5) Safin waking up in the 2nd set and going on to destroy hewitt in the final.

also, i believe serena took out davenport in the ladies final that year.

2005 easily.

1) Hewitt reaching the final with the draw he had with classic matches along the way.
2) Federer v Safin
3) First night slam final
4) GOAT apparel.

not talking about finals in particular, but in recent time i liked:
  • the 2004 safin run (beating martin, blake, roddick and agassi... the last two being really thrilling and high quality matches)
  • the 2006 baghdatis run (nice wins over stepanek, roddick, ljubicic and nalbandian... what a comeback in the SF !)
  • the 2007 gonzalez run (del potro, hewitt, blake, nadal and haas... cakewalk draw ? and of course i was particularly touched by his merciless butchering of the nadal in the QF...)
  • the 2008 tsonga run (kicking out the muzzette in the 1st round... and this flawless destruction of the nadal in the SF: now this what i call cleaning a draw !)

2007 or 2010. 2012 sucked, the matches were too long.

I have that match on DVD. Awesome. Love to watch it - but not in HD.

As an honorable mention, there was a final in the late 80's or early 90's where they had a little girl come out before the men's final and belt out an incredible version of 'Waltzing Mathilda'. One of the coolest pre-match events I've ever seen - really captured the spirit of Australia.
