Any way to salvage 17ft string?

So I had a brain freeze and cut 17ft off the reel of RPM Blast. I need to string the mains on my APD and it needs 19ft.
Can I omit the last main on each side and somehow try to tie it off?
Or should I just use the string as a clothesline to hang my underwear?

You may be able to use it for some racket's crosses especially if you use a starting knot.

Anyone ever try a 3-piece string job? That's what I'd do to save that 17-footer. Or course, I'd have 6 knots which may look silly...

I have tried this and it does not work well for two reasons. 1, you'll end up damaging a grommet by widening it to make room for two strings and then having to tie a starting knot on it, and 2, you end up pulling tension on that knot and tying it off on another grommet OR on top of another knot. End result is that string, no matter what tension you set it at, is going to be superbly floppy to the point that you might as well not even have it there.

If you string the mains and the bottom two crosses with one string 17' would be plenty for the remaining crosses in a racket. But then again I would rather not do that.

You can string just the "center" mains with it. For example, 12 or 14. The outermost 4 or 2 mains will come from the same string as the cross.

The trick is to calculate the pattern so that mains will tie on mains, and not on the crosses. But if you have 2 extra clamps, the latter is not a problem, either.

17' is enough to do all the crosses on that racket. Or, like you mentioned, you could do all but the outside main on each side. Then, cut about 20' for the crosses. Start at the top, string the last outside main on 1 side, then the bottom cross, then the last main on the other side. Now, you're at the top, ready to string down. You have to make sure the top cross is weaved the same as the bottom cross (1 and 19 should be weaved the same). The trouble is probably finding enough tie-offs at the top. You may have to enlarge 1 hole.

I agree with Steve, it should be enough for crosses on an 16x19 racket. Though the tie off may be tricky. The best way to check, is to use the 17' length you have. Measure 19 widths with this length. If you have exactly 19 widths or more you are good to go. I do this all the time to measure crosses from a reel.

I would use that string for cross string. I would use a little more string for the mains, and keep the extra length on one side. Once the mains are done, on that longer side hold with starting clamp and not tie off as yet. Then start cross strings with the 17' piece that you have. If you do not have enough string to complete your cross strings with that 17' piece, then you have that extra length that you are holding with the starting clamp to complete the job.
Simple as that.
