I've had some pain in my achilles tendon the last few weeks for the first time ever.
I'm resting up for a couple of weeks and in the meantime I'm looking for new shoes. I've heard my old shoes, the Nike 3.3 Ballistecs have had a ton of negative feedback and have also caused me to lose a toenail! However, They did fit snug as I have narrowish feet and most likely needed to be half a size longer for more toe space. Again, the main thing is the achilles problems so any recommendations for a shoe with great support? So far I've liked the Prince mid t22's but they are only available on the US tennis warehouse site (shipping is too expensive to UK). I heard the 2.3 and the 4.3's are also much better than the 3.3s so they could be another option. |

My thought on this - having had issues with my achilles tendons is to get shoes which are snug but not stiff - like the Vapor 9s - but the bulk of the solution is to be found in your warm-up/rest/recovery/prevention efforts.

I use the Dr. Scholls sports inserts with gel. They provide a little more cushioning than the stock ones normally. I also use the thick Thorlo socks. When my Achilles get a little stiff, I take out my home ultrasound unit and give them 5 minutes of treatment each on a low setting. I have very wide feet so New Balance is my only choice.

I feel your pain!!! Dr. Scholl's are way too light for support, I bought insoles on TW, orange. Thorlo socks may help, too.
I found that Babolat shoes offer the best support, but I am a female player. Mikeler gave you a great idea about that device, I ignored you could buy it (I had few sessions at the doc's and they do work). Also, find a good anti-inflammatory gel (you might need prescription)....all the best! |

Thanks all, you've given me a lot of food for thought!
I think, as I'm still relatively young, that the pain must be caused by tight calf muscles rather than an overuse injury and I've found some strengthening exercises the calves and achilles. Fingers crossed that they heal up in a couple of weeks. the 3.3s ballistecs were most likely not helping though so I'm gonna opt for the Vapor 9s and a heel pad of some sort as they seem very comfortable. Thanks again for the support! |
