I'm glad it hurts. As rafa says, one must suffer to succeed sometimes.

As for tennis, it will be a more popular sport without Federer, because a lot of people wrote tennis off when they saw Federer's warm-up gear in 2009 Wimbledon or his pathetic reaction to losing to Nadal at the AO. Images like that will thankfully not be repeated, and those who think tennis is pathetic may give it a 2nd chance thanks to the real men involved.
If only rafa was somehow more involved in tennis, then the healing could really begin.

Agreed. I actually thought he already retired before playing Murray when I saw the thread title.

He's said he will play until 2016. Hopefully he'll still be making semis at the majors at that point, for which he'll have to have a good ranking.

well its too late to come to his senses now. the match is 3 hours away. he should have been smart like rafa and retired before the tournament even began. even in retreat, nadal>federer

Federer can desperately play every tournament while Nadal takes occasional sabbaticals, but he still walks every step in Nadal shadow. He still has a few hours to withdraw and retire - let's see if he is wise enough to do that. I personally doubt it.

LOL, what about some of the Rafaholics? They can barely spell their names let alone know anything about tennis aside from swooning over what Rafa wears daily from his posted FB pics.

Are you suggesting Federer fake injuries too?

The Wife & Manager office has a broad budget to read and analyze Nadal statements in any form.

Yeah but if all 17 slams get stripped for doping, the sponsors will want their money back too and feds could wind up bankrupt and in jail, so it's all temporary.

You guys really are an disagreeable lot.

Can we not take stock of this moment in a great tennis player's history without resorting to trading ad hominem attacks on him and his rivals? There are a multitude of threads about that. Go there please.

Rafa is a great tennis player and his rivalry with Federer has given us some great tennis by both players during Federer's wins as well as his losses. How can a true tennis fan not appreciate this?

I hope Nadal can make a return to the game. It would be sad to see him fade away or retire due to injury.

When roger retires this will be one of the worst generations of tennis ever, can you imagine how boring djokovic vs nadal or djokovic vs murray every single final will be, defensive players ruin this sport.

Hope roger keeps winning slams for many years

I'm a huge Federer fan and was just as big an Agassi fan before...I thought it was going to be devastating when Agassi retired, but somehow it just didn't really matter that much. Probably because he accomplished so much and lived up to his potential later on in his career...obviously this part isn't going to be a problem for Federer.

can't escape the inevitable. federer is dun. the one thing he isnt good at is quitting. playing until an old age is just romantic ideals
