Default Retirement of Roger Federer

Admittedly, I have had a few cocktails tonight and feeling a bit pensive. That being said, I just watched Andy Roddick's last match of his career (2012 U.S. Open 4th Round) on youtube. It made me think that one day, Roger Federer will retire from tennis. Soon after, a wave of sadness washed over me. I imagine if he announces when his retirement will be, each match leading up to it will be more nerve wracking then they ever have been. I honestly think when this great player, champion, and man decides to quit, I will cry as though I am attending the funeral of a close family member. I have been with Federer on this journey of life for the last eight years or so. There have been breathtaking highs and terrible lows along the way. I can not help but think that when he retires, the sport of tennis will never be the same. I imagine that when all is said and done, I will no longer watch tennis once he stops playing.

Good. Hopefully you will stop posting as well. There are real, actual problems in the world and THIS is the thought that saddens you. Maudlin nonsense in the extreme. Read "Stumbling on Happiness" by Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert. The things we THINK are going to make us sad usually turn out to barely make us sad at all.

hahaha that first sentence is legendary. Don't worry bro, Fed still has some years ahead of him, more joy to us as fans. Hopefully he wins tonight. I'm with you on the sadness part that we will feel when he retires. You ain't the only one. Fed is the encapsulation of tennis to many of us.

Tennis will never be the same until some one new comes with such elegance and talent.

It has been a career with several highs, hardly any lows. In the bigger scheme of things, only match that hurts till now is USO 2009 against Delpo by 2 points. He was way too casual in the 4th set. Got spanked in the 5th when he least expected.

It's a bit silly to retire when you're still making the semis at slams. This wasn't Roddick's situation. So we have a few years left.

Are you for real? Do you go to psychology forums and ask them to watch tennis matches and ask them to stop studying as there are some other issues like hunger in the world? Just because someone is feeling strongly about a sport/player at some point does not mean he/she will not be feeling bad about other things and is not trying to make the world a better place.

I am sure there will be new boards and forums where ex-federer fans can gather and talk about the good ol' days. I am sure as if there is none then I will start one

The retirement of Federer, whenever it comes, will be a huge loss for tennis. Hopefully we're a few years away from that. As for Rafa, let's first hope he doesn't have to retire before Roger...

And El Diablo, 'There are real, actual problems in the world'... did you seriously type that? This is a tennis board, not a 'save the poor children' one.

Some Federholics don't like tennis at all. They only like watching Fed win (and count his records). So of course, they won't watch tennis once Fed is gone. Sad bunch.

some of them probably dont even play tennis regularly, which is a shame. to watch tennis and not play tennis is equivalent to liking something for superficial reasons

I love tennis, and watched it before Federer and will watch it afterwards, but I will no doubt miss the great Fed.

Certain other people on this forum only like watching Fed lose, of course, and may find tennis to be boring when they have no one left to hate.
