If any of you guys have read his book, Nadal has a foot problem which means he has to wear special insoles to even be able to play. The insoles cause his movement to put extra strain on his knees, so no matter what, his knees are always going to have extra strain on them, even if he moved as gracefully as Federer.
I think it's a misconception that his style of play is what causes his knee problems. There are plenty of players out there who grind even more than Nadal, and their knees are just fine. |

I know, I've been trying to drive that point through a few times. But people just ignore what they want to ignore. Still, fact is his knee problems have nothing to do with "style of play". It makes sense, otherwise other superlative defensers like Murray, Djoko and Ferrer would all have their knees shot as well. (And ironically, Ferrer has had his most successful season at 30 years old!) |

All players in this generation have to grind out a lot of points. Nadal actually has lots of easy points due to his lefty's advantage. Maybe Federer is most efficient in his serving games and that helps his longevity but... Last edited by ultradr : 01-30-2013 at 01:23 PM. |

Good news, Djokovic has no idea how to beat Nadal at Roland Garros, even when Nadal had his knee numbed in 2012, and even after Djokovic had the biggest mental edge anyone has ever seen. That's how far ahead of the pack Nadal is at Roland Garros.

Having written that I don't think anybody is really aligned perfectly when defending, Joker looks like he will sometimes snap in half, Murray grabs the back of his leg, federer looks like it really annoys him that he has to defend! I have discounted Ferrer because I don't think he really defends, under pressure from Djoker he just hit less hard but no real defensive digging or lobs, slices, junk balls. He plays a great game left, right, corner to corner..all day long...against anyone bar the top 4 on medium, slow courts-very effective. But those guys have seen it all before & know how to break it down. The defense has to be better sometimes. Point taken with Rafa's knees, they knew when he was 19 that he would get problems. He has been on borrowed time since then.Changing his movement pattern would have been useless, beefing up his serve, shortening points, coming in & volleying made more sense. Just hope he can get back & compete at RG & Wimbledon, try to duck major hardcourt swing & just do what he can. If he can't the game has lost a great champion. |

Just because his knees are in pain doesn't mean he can't play tennis as well as ever. Every NFL player and most NBA players play in pain. What would reduce his effectiveness is if the injury causes him to be less mobile. I don't know one way or the other about that, we will see how he comes back, but I'm sure he is truly in pain
He could always just trim his schedule to clay and grass with an occasional hard-court event that might be important to him. |

Tell us something new. Knee, foot, long season, too much drug testing, too many hard court events, 2 yr ranking, indoor is not real tennis.... All this guy does is complain.
Perhaps he should take up fly fishing as a sport since he likes it so much. Oh wait, if he started competing, perhaps he would find excuses there too....water is too cold, Mirka is scaring the fish away, injured finger, carpal tunnel syndrome. Sheesh |
