is there a certain way that pros place lead on racquets? for example would they stack 5 piece on top of each other at 12 o'clock or maybe like a staircase similar to how sampras had his.
i saw pictures of tsongas and wawrinka.. i seem to think that they may have a similar approach of how the lead is stacked and placed. |

It's all just the players personal preference.

is there a difference between staggering the lead like a stair case or just stacking the same size pieces?

I don't think so. But lead at different places makes a difference. Placing lead at 3 and 9 is different that placing it at 12. The 3 and 9 make this sweetspot feel a little wider imo and at 12 it makes the racquet feel a little whippier

If lead is placed at 12, it is generally spread out under the bumper, and then another layer added if more is required.
Sampras' seems to have been layered purely because of the sheer amount added. I like my lead at 12, have never like the feel at 3 and 9 though the stability it adds is unquestionable.

If I want to increase the racquet's weight without changing the balance does it matter where I put the lead? I mean, does it make a difference in feel/playing characteristics if I put it to racquet throat or head and bumper?

What are you trying to achieve?
If you simply want a more solid, stiff feel then add a few grams at the balance point (probably in the throat somewhere). More stability? 3 and 9 with weight in the butt or handle to maintain balance point. More power and spin? Split it between 12 o' clock and the butt/ hanle.

Yes, we know it's all about the technique. But if your racquet collapses every time you volley..you need to add some lead to it... |

Very small if any. If the weight is staircased it spreads the weight out more and provides a layers effect so the grommet can follow the contour easier if there are lots of layers.

14 grams in the handle is too much. Try 2 grams at 3 and 2 grams at 9, and 2-6 grams in the handle, depending on where you want your balance point.

Putting lead in your racquet handle is not going to increase serve power on a flat serve. Power on your serve in terms of your racquet is about swingweight, which means lead in the hoop.

Also, more importantly racquet head speed. You can kill the ball with good head speed.
