Both Federer and Sampras have generated hours of highlight reel backhands but I wouldn't pick them over backhands like Guga, Edberg, Saffin, Agassi, and many others. I think what you have in guys like Roger and Pete are insanely well coordinated atheletes that can pull of amazing backhands but as far as stroke after stroke rallies there many better backhands out there.

Just because Federer has one of the best forehands in history doesn't mean his backhand is far behind. I don't know what's so hard for people to understand about this. One guy came along that was able to pin him in his backhand corner and all of a sudden his backhand sucks? His backhand slice alone has more variety than some players backhand has all together.
Thanks, MichaelNadal. If I had never seen Federer play, I would assume he had a 3.0 level backhand based off what I read on these forums.

Both Nadal and Fed rely so much on their movement to cover their backhands. I rate Fed's BH > Nadal's because of Fed's versatility (slice etc.)

No one measuring Fed's BH based on Nadal. My perspective on things stretches a little farther than Nadal.

Again, what is your criteria for judging? Are you talking about a BH from a rally shot's perspective? Are you talking about BH as a weapon? Are you talking about a BH that fits in the overall game really well?

As far as BHs are concerned, Agassi, Edberg, Lendl, Safin all had better shots. Not only better but more reliable rally shots.

As a weapon, Gasquet and Wawrinka are great but their court positioning renders their BHs useless.

Let me put it this pay, if Fed had the same BH he does now and had Agassi's movement, he would not have won as many majors. Fed can do enough with his BH so that it is not a liability. Occasional brilliance doesn't count.

Well said, and yes, Becker was amazing

Yeah don't pay any heed to these forums. Like Michael said, it's all relative. Federer's BH doesn't suck, it just "sucks" relative to his FH.

Who said Fed's BH sucks? For someone to win 17 majors, they can't have any obvious weakness. However, Fed does not have the best BH. That is BS.

2008, Moya was dominating but he was carrying an injury and Murray was able to break back a lot and win. You'd have to have seen the match to understand, the scoreline doesn't really tell the tale.

Federer and Sampras should never even be mentioned in the same sentence backhand-wise. It's not even close. Federer is a baseliner. Sampras won most of his slams with serve and volley. It's a lot easier to cover your backhand when you come in so much than when you're trying to take people apart from the back of the court.

No one here said Roger has the best BH
