Considered the best mexican ever, along Raton Osuna, though he never took a slam title.raul played the left side in the famous doubles team with Brian Gottfried.į
Quick, agressive, nimble, not powerful at any stroke, but solid at all of them, good volleyer, even on clay, and very good all round game.won the then prestigious Italian Open against classy clay courter Manuel Orantes in straight sets.Scored wins over all the big names, beating Bjorn Borg and Jimmy Connors among others. Raul also reached the Wimbledon and Roland Garros semis as well as many quarters there, and also at the US Open during his prime years that stretch from 1974 to 1978.was never the same player, and I donīt know why, from 1979 till 1983 when he retired.he also played several WCT finals and YEC and ranked in the top 10 for some years.

As for Ramirez, he certainly has his place in what turned out to be the best tennis era.

I have seen a Nastase - Ramirez Wimbledon - a superb show- both are just too quick & talented...(was it 5 sets?) 'tis '76 before Nastase runs into the "alien," as he calls him - Borg...

My first year working at the TransAmerica, while stringing some rackets for some collegiate player from Tennessee, Raul came in and asked me to hit, since the two courts weren't occupied at the noon hour.
I knew how he was, he just figured a fast stringer of gut should know how to hit. We hit for almost an hour, and boy, was I tired and winded. While we were hitting, MikeCahill came by looking for the stringer, who should have been me, and shot the sh.. for a few minutes, slowly changing into his shorts and taking my place. They would hang around our stringing booth that tourney and the following. |

LeeD,
Did his ease of his foot speed strike you when you hit with him? I have noticed that the truly fast ones need to be appreciated in person. I'll never forget the time when Nastase was practicing in earnest and we all stood at the fence - staring... |
