Can someone explain to me why Andy still has an active ranking? I thought once a player retires there ranking goes off the system? It does not matter a whole lot but I just found it strange, would he have asked to keep his ranking till it drops and does that possibly mean he is kepeing it open? Because I dont see Andy ever coming back so it is strange why his ranking is left active?

It sounds like it just slowly fades away. It is funny to think you can rise in the system when you're retired.

I think you have to request to be stripped away, like Henin did in 2008.

That's nothing. A Professional Boxer once got a placement into the top 10 rankings of the WBA (World Boxing Association). What's funny is that he'd been dead for years.

No more so than if you are active but don't play that week. If player ahead of you has big result from year ago that drops off, you can gain ranking spot(s) without playing.

Some players will specifically request that they be removed from the rankings upon retirement (Ljubicic, Safin). These are the exceptions; normal is for player's points to slowly drop off and after a year of non-play they'll be unranked. JCF, Clement, Gonzalez, and Schuettler are all currently ranked despite announcing retirements, similar to Roddick.

It does seem odd. When a player formally announces his retirement to the ATP, the latter should terminate his ranking accordingly. It's as if they don't quite believe them until they've not played for at least a year!

Soderling fell out of the rankings after a year's absence despite not announcing his retirement (as yet).

What if a player changes his mind and comes back less than 12 months after retirement?

Wouldn't it make sense that he kept his points from the last 52 weeks?

The reason Roddick rose in the rankings is because he hasn't officially handed in the paperwork stating he has retired. He recently had to report his location to the anti doping agency, So as it is he holds his points for the 1 year since he earned them
