Starting A USTA Team
Hi All,
I am looking at starting a mens 5.0 team but im not sure where to begin as far as how to I become a captain and get a team number? We are in a area where we have a 4.5 team but those that have a 5.0 rating are not allowed to play and don't have a team to participate on which is why im looking at starting a team. How exactly does one become a captain and get a team number? Thanks |

there is a 5.0 league but there are only 2 teams and we want to be the third if that makes sense.

In Norcal it is too late to register a new team for 18+, don't know about where you are. As well, be aware that (at least in Norcal) 5.0 18 and over is now 5.0+, which means you can roster a couple of 5.5 players and use them under certain circumstances. Good luck |

Huh it doesn't look possible to do that for the southwest? I looked and I see what you mean for norcal though

Oh, OK.
The answer is still to contact your league coordinator for next steps. Here, you have to post a refundable deposit and sign an agreement to captain. You can certainly start rounding up players now, though.

oh thanks for help! I contacted her and am waiting for the reply! how much is the deposit? Are there any perks of being a captain opposed to a player?

Every section and district is different as to fees, costs, etc. If you are in southwest and I'm guessing you are in CAZ, did you contact Leslee Baska? That is your league coordinator. Please send all your inquiries to her, she can help you as a new captain to figure out what your job will entail.

Few perks, mostly headaches.
You do get to set the lineup, so that's something.

haha I haven't even made a team and am already having headaches... are the perks mostly just shirts and hats the usta sends you or is there any money because one guy told me that they can give you money if you form a big enough team?

I'm curious about these perks you mention. I captain a 5.0 team and have never heard of shirts and hats, let alone money.
It can be a bit of a struggle and I think 5.0 might even pose more of a challenge. Even though I've got 12 guys, it's frequently a challenge to get 5 for our match. You might have a different situation, but just an forewarning from my perspective |

No shirts. We used to get a hat, which wasn't a very nice hat.
Now instead of the hat each captain gets one ticket to the Washington DC ATP 500 tournament here in August. I would prefer that each captain get free registration, but I'll take the ticket.

Each District can set what they want to give to Captains if they want captains incentives. Not all do. If your team goes to Section around here and wins the local league, then you usually get a gift, i.e. a towel, hat, etc. for each team member. Last year, there was a national campaign for people who formed teams with "mostly all new usta members" they had to be a certain percentage of New USTA members not people who had played usta before. These are annual incentive programs for captains and I don't think they are offering that this year.
Most Districts will also pitch in a very small amount of money to offset travel to section or nationals, but it does not cover the costs at all. This is amateur tennis. Captains are basically volunteers. |

ok I see... I just emailed the league coordinator so hopefully they respond... the format for 5.0 is 2 singles 3 doubles right?
