Default Prestretch button question

Now that I'm the proud owner of a fancy machine with pre-stretch settings for 5%, 10%, 20%, do the pro's still recommend manually stretching synthetics and gut?

Thanks

I really don't use the machines pre stretch functions at all only when asked for and thats rare. Those people knows what to expect from that.

The only prestretching I do is a light manual (not machine) prestretch of nat. gut just to reduce some of the coil memory, and it is a light prestretch only.

With a machine prestretch the % over reference tension that it overpulls, just how much of that returns back to reference tension, especially with the cross strings as friction of the crosses against the mains can keep some of that overpull from returning back to set reference tension.

That said, I know others here use those settings, thats their preference, I would only use it when requested only.

I don't believe there is a synthetic where a prestretch is recommended. Years ago there was a multi. made where the manuf. recommended it, (I can't remember that name right now) but even that string is no longer made.It may have been TF 515
I would not prestretch a poly and remove what little elasticity that string has.

For the most part the button for the % prestretch should hardly ever be used in my opinion. I know other will disagree with these comments, and thats a preference as well, just like one string does not suit all, but I bet that the majority follow along these lines.

Tecnifibre used to recommend increasing the tension by 10% as did Isospeed, but I've never seen a company stated it should be pre-stretch. Although going back to Isospeed, some of their strings came 'pre-stretched' on a mini reel.

I don't know of any company now that states to increase tension on their multis/syn gut.

If I use a machine with a pre-stretch function its usually at a tourney, and then the players ask for x% pre-stretch if they want it. Otherwise its just standard tensioning.

As for my own customers, I'll manual pre-stretched if asked, but none of them do.

Regards

Paul

I don't know what "the pro's" recommend..... I usually do what feels good for me that produces positive results..... with that.... I pre-stretch using the machine's function - usually 10% on very stretchy strings and 5% on less stretchy strings - because it (the machine) is more consistent/less varied over what I used to do by hand.....
