Like Tracy Austin said: "She didn't look ill until 2-6 0-2 and then suddenly two points later, she's too sick to play. It's the finals of a Grand Slam - you go the distance unless you cannot stand up anymore."

It really stinks that someone would have to win their first Grand Slam this way. I am a huge JHH fan but that was just bush league, she should have at least played it out and let Amelie have her glory. Marathon runners #1/#2 all over themselves, Sampras throws up during a match but guts it out, but you're telling me JHH has to retire because of a tummyache?

Its too bad for Amelie, because she was playing so well and deserved to go all the way.

Pathetic. I think Amelie would have won regardless but a stomach ache?? C'mon, this is a grand slam final!! Where's the vomit? I think it must have been that time of the month.

I just googled GAVISCON. It's an antacid -- for heartburn!
The doctor offered it to JHH. She refused it. TERRIBLE!! |

we don't know what was really wrong with her. i'm sure she realized that the world was watching and she would get a lot of heat for retiring. she's always been a fighter and a hard worker on the court. that's why she is so popular. so she must have been feeling SOMETHING to make her throw it all away by retiring. her reputation, her, fanbase, her standing in the game, her chance at a major . . . .
i mean, she's no dummy. this will be one of the most talked about tennis moments of the year (and beyond, perhaps). already her 'fans' on this board have thrown her to the dogs (with friends like that, who needs enemies)! no sane person would choose to put themselves through all this s**t without a good reason. all credit to mauresmo. you finally did it, girly! kudos! |

What Justine did was low and classless! What happened to the Justine who was limping around, cramping and finding away to beat Jennifer Capriati in the 2003 USO semis? The same Justine that went on an IV afterwards, called herself "questionable" for the finals and then beat Kim in straight sets?!!
Justine has experienced the thrill of winning Championship point at a major four times and she should have given Amelie her chance to experience it. Damn it, Shriekapova would have fought for every point. DAMN IT! |

I'm hoping some Aussies bring their BB guns to the Men's final. Bye bye birdies.

Don't know how serious JHH's condition was, she's certainly had viral infections in the past that have weakened her severely, but she should have at least finished out the match. She had enough power to swing at a few balls. At least make a go of it, then explain it all away afterwards.
If it were me, they'd have to kill me before I left a Grand Slam final. Jeff

I used to be a fan of Justine Henin because of how she hit the ball. Now to me she a little b*** because of how she behaved.
She knew very well what this win would mean to Mauresmo. She was getting outplayed. She couldn't handle it. She couldn't swallow it. So she just quit. Now that brings some memories and her classless move agains S. Williams at the French (and I'm no fan of Williams). Turns out she is just a little egomaniac without respect for her opponents and the game... SO SAD... |

I have admired Justine for many years, but I don't think she thought this through very well in the moment and she made a terrible mistake.
You could see the pained look on Geoff Pollard's face (Tennis Australia Pres). He tried to give Justine some cover by saying she was injured, but he was all too aware that the reason she gave for retiring was actually indefensible. He knew that what she had done was simply not worthy of a GS champion and certainly not worthy of a GS tournament. Only the 4th woman to retire during a GS final in over 100 years! One of the great things about this sport is its history and tradition and ethic of sportsmanship. Inadvertantly, I'm sure, Justine made a big mistake. I hope she learns from it -- and not just because she'll be getting a lot of flak about it. I hope she works it out for herself in her quiet moments. All credit to Amelie. She was playing superbly and fully deserved to be Champion. |

Bad sportmanship from JHH. I think she will define her loss because of illness or whatsoever. No offense, she has a nice game but I assume she doesn't want to see 0-6, 1-6 in a slam final...
Anyways, congratulations to Mauresmo for her 1st GS |

Allez Amelie!
I once had respect for JHH, but quitting in a slam final with a psychologically induced tummy ache is poor sportsmanship. I guess she can't handle being thrashed by Mauresmo. Bien joue Amelie! Now we know who has the true heart of a champ. |

Heh, you all seem really quick to dismiss Henin as quitting while she could have played on... are you that sure that she could've? Pain is pain, regardless of whether it comes from an injury or an illness...
