Default Could someone actually strike the ball this well?

I saw a guy named jessup win this open tournament. He was using a prince racquet that had the "P" stenciled on it. However, right in the middle of the "P" there was a spot missing which was exactly the size of a tennis ball. Could this guy acutally hit the ball so well he wore out a ball size mark on the stencil? Or was this a psych-out tactic?

LOL - Edo and Coda.

I think it was a psych-out tactic - My guess is that even if you hit the ball in the sweet-spot on every shot, the strings move and rub off the ink.

When I played HS tennis, there was a kid (one of the top 10 players in Texas at the time, if I remember right) who stenciled his entire racquet stringbed black. He too had a circle worn through the ink just larger than a ball. What I was told then was that he ocasionally did this with his practice racquet to check his contact point. The spot was slightly oblong, so I have no reason to believe that he just stenciled everything but the spot. He was not an ego maniac.

was this guy michael jessup at the mountain view open a while back? I've seen him play before-it's out of this world . I wonder how he'd match up in futures and challengers

He was in the the 300s on the ATP ranking a few years back. My friend lost to him recently 3 and 4.

He's a retriever with excellent hand eye coordination and who has probably drilled about 5 billion balls over his life. I would see it hard to accomplish the feat you described in a match but on a practice court an accomplished player should be able to do it.

He's a teaching pro, I think in the South Bay, forget where but I'm sure you could get a lesson and ask him his secret!!!!
