Marat couldn't defend his championship points, and he stands now #50...
Santoro is 24 places up to #41 Hewitt lost 5 places to #11. Kiefer +13 up to #12. David Ferrer, new Top10 (#10) Ivan Ljubicic +3 to #5 (YAAAYYY And that's pretty much it Ohh, and Federer surpasses the 7000 points... is that a new record?? http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/entrysystem/

I was disappointed to see Safin drop to #50 but that's what happens when you take that much time off.

And of course the Bagman is up to #27 in the world.
This is just the start for Haas (now #30) to climb his way to the top 10!!!!!!!!!! |

I don't understand the point system. Someone explain how they came to those numbers?

Yup, Federer is the first to hit 7000 points As for whoever asked how the entry system works, it's quite complicated. If you remember the old Champions Race, you were awarded 200 points for a Slam, 140 for a Slam finalist, 90 for semifinals, 50 for quarters, and in International Series, you got 35 points for winning, 24 for a finalist, 15 for semis, and 8 for quarters. What the entry system does is add a zero to that number and then cut it in half. So since Marat Safin did not defend his Aussie Open title, he lost 1000 points (200 x 10 divided by 2). Baghdatis reached the 4th round last year, so he had to defend 150 points this week. He gained 700 by reaching the final, so therefore gained 550 points in the entry system. It is a 52 week thing, so if you theoretically have to defend points that you earned the previous year. Nadal will have to defend his French Open title, so even if he reaches the semifinals, a great result, he technically loses 550 points (200-90 = 110 x 10 = 1100/2=550) . Nadal also lost 150 points this week because he reached the 4th round last year and did not play this year. Roddick lost 300 points because he only reached the 4th round this year (150 points) after reaching the semis last year (450 points). Hewitt took a big hit, losing 665 points, reaching the 2nd round (35 points) this year after going all the way to the finals last year (700 points). Kapeesh? |

it is really a 52 week system ... if a tournament is postponed from say January to June ... then the champion last year loses the points in january and can regain them in june ...

Robby Ginepri cannot be feeling good knowing that even though he is ranked 4 spots higher than Blake, he's not going to be playing Davis Cup because he blew a 2 set, 3-0 lead against a qualifier. That has to hurt. |
