Default Roger potentialy a year away from most consecutive weeks at #1 record!

If Roger is ranked #1 the week the Pacific Life Open starts next year, he will have been ranked #1 161 consecutive weeks breaking the record held by Connors at 160 weeks. With Nadal not doing as well as Roger in the Pacific Life Open a couple weeks ago, the odds of this happening are more likely since the 12-year span of results that will determine if Roger is #1 at this time next year started with that event. Nadal almost certainly could not be #1 before Australia next year, with the big deficit in points from that event not playing this year and Roger winning it, but potentialy he could take it after Australia, sometime before the Pacific Life, but now that is much more unlikely with the result of the Pacific Life and pending the result at this weeks(and next)Nasdaq.

Yup, only 7 slams & 2 year end #1's are all you need to be the GOAT. Guess they'll be a new GOAT every 10 years or so. Did the OP even say anything about GOAT?

That is an amazing record, if it happens. I remember what a monumental achievement it was for Wilander to end Lendl's streak. It seemed like that guy was #1 forever.
You should put this in pro player discussion.

Sampras was year end #1 for 6 straight years. He wasn't #1 every week during that span. The OP is talking about consecutive weeks at #1. I think Sampras is #4 on that list(behind Connors, Lendl, Fed)

I don't think Fed will get the year end #1 record.
He'll need to be #1 at the end of 2010. He'll be 29 then.

federerhoogenbandfan,
was just thinking about the longest previous streaks. Sampras was way ahead of the field after Wimbledon '94. He got injured, Agassi started playing well & got to #1 by March of '95.
Lendl missed a lot of '88 due to injury. Had he been healthy I don't think Wilander would have gotten to #1.
If Fed is healthy, no way can anyone pass him by March of next year.

Moderators:can you move this to pro player discussion?

what was (were?) lendl's injury(ies) during 1988 ?...

at least lendl is the only player to have been able to re-finish a year #1 after having surrended the (year-end) #1 spot (1985-1987 + 1989).

Unless someone dominates asport like Michael Jordan in the NBA, it's hard to say definitively to say who's GOAT.

Greatest of All Tankers (usually refers to Federer, Nadal, Djoko, Kolya whenever they lose)

OP - Order of Play, but you knew that.
