Default conchita martinez

I haven't seen her on the tour in ages. Has she retired? Is she injured?

Man she's like from the steffi graf era isn't she way back when? I saw her play on tv once. She and elena dementieva have about the same serving prowess.

I think she is close to retiring. Her ranking is in the 100s or more. Her game is no longer effective, top spins and loopy shots. She got spanked alot during the past few years.

She's a moonball specialist, but effective volleyer. Top 5 in her prime. One slam wonder - Wimbledon (forgot the year). People had to bring a pillow whenever she played against Sanchez Vicario. Two moonball greats - how exciting could it get.

What a great run she had winning Wimbledon, a great player, much more exiting than Vicario. Great courtsense.

Agreed, nowadays people may think of her as a moonballer, but she was a very talented player, but lousy mental game. She had all the shots, was far more talented than ASV and some of her matches were great to watch. In these days, she just doesn't have time and enough power to hit those deep topspin groundstrokes, but she was a good player.

I don't know for sure but I do know that she had a bad wrist injury that was taking a long time to heal at the end of last year. She was, from I heard and read, contemplating retirement but nothing has been made official. My guess is she'll play a little more and see where she is.

Conchita had game and court sense - she used to own the chunkier Davenport, the topspin groundies and Conchita's court coverage, though that's reversed in recent years as Conchita's become older and Davenport became fitter.

I looked but couldn't find any info. If you have a link, give it to me. Otherwise, you're contributing nothing to my thread. F U

I always think of Mauresmo as the present day version of Conchita Martinez. Mauresmo is prone to hit loopy topspin shots off the forehand and backhand, slices a lot, serves and volleys ocassionally, good at the net. Mauresmo is more athletic, powerful. Conchita actually had a very good forehand when she went for winners. I think it constantly surprised her opponents and watching public. She was a great player and a player I enjoyed watching a lot.

Is Sanchez Vicario in Hall of Fame yet?

She just upset Shuai Peng yesterday in Amelia Island. She has to play Francesca Schiavone next and is expected to lose. Conchita has been playing doubles with Ruano Pascual. The Mauresmo comparision is an interesting observation....wonder if Amelie saw much of Conchita's matches.
