so I guess this is similar to clapping with your racket when your opponent hits a passign shot instead of screaming "oh SH1T! HOW COULD I MISS THAT BLOODY SHOT." etc..

I clap and say good shot. sometimes after a good rally too.
anyone else agree/ do the same?

I remember the first time I apologized for a lucky shot was a natural reaction, becoz I have been watching too much tennis on TV and the pros always apologize after such shots =D

Now, I usually do the hand-gesture thing just to be respectful, unless I really don't like the person I'm playing against

Cool

You won the point, that's that. You don't have to appologize for winning

some guy who i play (an adult, middle aged, good player, very strong) always apologizes every time he hits a fault that goes closer to the baseline, or he double-faults, or if he screws up when we have a rally going. the funny part is im the one who always wins (6-0, 6-2, 6-1, etc). sometime ill just have to tell him go for your shots man, you dont need to apologize

i only apologize for net cords, or if i hit the person by accident (which has only happened once or twice). but on net cords, if its a big point, im like "COME ON BABE!" and then "oh sorry..." lol btw i only say come on in my head, not outloud

Etiquette is simply a manner of doing things that allows us to live among other people, each with their own self-centered ambitions, more eficiently. It's like imposing a super-ego to temper our ruthless little ids- seeing things from another vantage point.

Perhaps lifting a hand is just a meaningless gesture. Meaningless gestures have sometimes started, sometimes prevented, years of human catastrophy.

Also, more people will be willing to play/work with you if you have certain social skills.
