Question on holding an Eastern B/H Grip for a kick Serve!

I was curious about something. I usually use the standard continental grip on my serve. My kick serve is getting pretty good but my shoulder is getting sore. I think I am using too much shoulder so I am trying to work on other areas of the kinetic chain so that I use all body parts, i.e. knee bend, good shoulder rotation, etc. I know where the toss goes but I am working on a more eastern backhand grip to help generate spin. What I find is that when I use a eastern backhand grip is that I can't keep my whole hand on the grip while I serve. The angle of the grip makes it hard to do so. If I choke down on the grip I can have my thumb and forefinger on the grip and maintain a eastern backhand grip. The remaning fingers (pinky, ring finger, etc) are loose. I know that this is good as it keeps a loose wrist. My question is this normal or should you be able to keep your whole hand on the grip while using an eastern backhand on your serve?
