Do any of your racquets say "HEAD Barcode Label Inside" on the side of the frame? So I used the PT280 back in college some 15 years ago and just now back into the swing of things over the last year. Picked up a few on the bay and put new grommets/pallets on them. Great flex and I like the weight to them.
I searched this forum but couldn't find recommendations for strings for the PT280 other than just going for a 17 gauge string (which I will try)
Anyone have any input on using a hybrid string set up on these?? I tried Yonex Poly Pro Tour hybrid with Wilson NXT 15 and liked it.
Or any soft poly string that works well? (healthy now but coming off some elbow problems ... dang Graphene Radical)
Side note, all of the ones I've picked up are "designed in Austria" - I know that means made in China but one of my racquets is a lighter blue than the other ones. Wondering if it is different in any way or it's just a fluke? I attached some pics - the one in the middle is the lighter blue one.
Hi guys, like promised yesterday i tested the Pro Tour 280 in the field.
The strings are Babolat Xcel Limited 1,30mm 16g and the tension was 26 kg - 57 lbs on mains 25 kg - 55 lbs on crosses.
These are the first impressions after 3h of use: 20 mins to warm-up, 2 matches 2h-20min and then 20 mins of vole, demi-vole' and serves.
I missed some balls, i was used to the 660 frame of the previous racquet, Head Competition 660.
20 mins of warm-up wasn't enough to understand the characteristics of the racquet and the first match in double my team won 6-1 6-2, we were technically superior of the other team, we didn't push too much.
The second match was harder for me, it was a single match, my teammate versus me, we are technically at the same level, but he is fast and thin, while i'm fat and slow but i can see the field better (if you understand what i mean).
Anyway i lose in 2 sets 2-6 5-7 but i could test the racquet and finally feel the racquet.
Like with the Head Competition 660, i found the feel very very good, also if at the end i had some elbow pain, but very little, today i have no more, i don't know if it is a sign or it is normal after 3 hours, i remember i had the same feeling with the Head Competition 660, maybe the weight of the racquet ... i don't know, but for now it is ok, then we'll see in the future.
Pros:
Control, control, control: my shots in air, vole', demi-vole' are controlled at the perfection, like also slices and touch under the net.
Serves: i need to push a little more (but i need to verify, i was very tired yesterday in the 4th set) but sliced serves are perfect, i can make a short ball (in slice) more easily.
I can use forehand easily and it keeps the ball in the field if i'm in the sweet-spot or around it.
I still need to fix my backhand but i used it not so much and a lot of time in recovery, but today i count to play 2 hours again.
Cons:
Forehand too on the sides when i try to cross the ball or to push something more, but maybe this is a technique problem, i will have to investigate from the videos, to understand if i'm wrong position or the movement is not correct.
The 660 frame is bigger and permit more recovery in hard situation, with the 630 i had some problem to recover on sides shots, i will have to run before or faster
3 hours are not enough to give the final feeling, i will have to test it more, hope today to play other 2 hours and tomorrow too, in the while i found another racquet Head Pro Tour Lite 630, if it has the same frame and the same characteristic of the PT280/630 i will buy like second racquet, from that i read, it would be lighter, that could be good, i can add weight if i need, but i read also it is head heavier, i will need to add some weight on the butt cap ? If so how much ? I would like to have 2 identical racquet with 2 lightly different setups, just to try different strings.
A good news for me, my calf seems fixed properly, also if yesterday i left some balls because i didn't want to stretch it again.
Let me know what you think.

It is a great control frame, great for volleys and all round game. If you add more weight you might have too much static weight. depends what you are comfortable with. The lite tour 630 green one is the same mold, and only 300grams strung with 8points head light, there is also an XL version.

Yes i got the green one.
So is it only lighter ? Other differences ? Do i need to put some weight on ?
I would like to have 2 similar racquets with same strings but different tensions
I read the lite is head heavier and someone recommend to put some weight in the butt cap.
How i know if do i need some weight ? How do i recognize it while playing tennis ?
It is up to you if you want to put weight on, you can do it by lead, bluetac in handle, silicone, or leather grip with lead at 12 o'clock e.t.c
Get a racquet you love, get the specs like balance from a stringer, work out what you like playing with. For me more weight = more control / stability.
Get a heavy leather grip and maybe some more weight in the handle, i'm not an expert on the mathematics, but look at the lead tape customization thread and grip thread I posted. Some leather grips have added 12-16 grams for me.
Here is the balance chart
For a 27” frame
Even balance = 34.30
1pt head light = 33.98
2 pts head light = 33.66
3 pts head light = 33.35
4 pts head light = 33.03
5 pts head light = 32.71
6 pts head light = 32.39
7 pts head light = 32.08
8 pts head light = 31.76
9 pts head light = 31.44
10 pts head light = 31.12
11 pts head light = 30.81
12 pts head light = 30.49
Ok but it is 8 point head heavier, so how to revert it ? i think it is impossible to bring it to a Head Lighter setup or not ?

Get a real heavy grip leather or synthetic, look in the grip thread to see what is heavy and you can get in your area or on the net. Then measure the balance. This will then tell you how much you will need to add. A stringer or racquet shop should be able to do this without problems. If you can get it to at least 33cm balance you might be happy with that..
Yes i got the green one.

I could use a leather grip for this, so i can add some weight, right ?
Green version = NO TWARON
argggggg so i can't have two similar racquets ?
i would like to have 2 racquets with similar specs but different strings setup to try (different tensions or type of strings).
My Pro Tour 280 strung weigh 344 grams with Full cap, Head hydrosorb grip 1,8mm and head overgrip extreme soft 0,5mm
i will have to search for another pro tour 630 or 280
Thats not correct! The green Lite Tour 630 and the Lite Tour eXtra Long have Twaron...Green version = NO TWARON

I stand corrected, was always under impression in this thread by users quoting no twaron in the standard length version
weigh your racquet on a scale and measure the balance and then put the lead where you think it needs it.hmm ok better, so, i'm thinking to make Pro Tour lite 630 lighter than Pro Tour 280 at the beginning and try it, so i can understand if it is better or worst for my needs.
I was thinking to target the weight at 320-330 grams (24 or 14 grams in less, i don't know if difference is noticeable).
Lead-up where ? on the frame on under the butt cap ? I thought to use a very heavier grip, maybe a leather grip around 24-25gr, so i would reach the 310-315grams then add some weight to balance it better, but where to put it ?
Gut / poly best way to go in these gems!
Poly worthy mentions, Wilson revolve, Kirschbaum spikey, solinco tourbite and Hyper G
Thx! I gotta try a gut hybrid. I'm a string breaker tho so I'm also curious of any more economical hybrid options? I ordered some 17 gauge Wilson Revolve so gonna try that too bc I've heard it's pretty arm friendly.
I have used micro sheep syn gut in full bed (Courier) and hybrids poly/syn gut and works great. Hyper G felt so good in 16guage. I have only once broken a string in these sticks and that was a thin guage like 18 or so...
You've tried SynGut mains Poly crosses as well as the reverse? If so what were your thoughts? Also, what gauge would you recommend in the hybrid? Thx!
Ok another day with my PT280 (3h and half of play) strung at 26/25kg with Babolat Xcel Limited 1,30mm 16G.
40 mins of warm-up then matches, won a double 6-2 3-6 7-6 (Tie Break 7-3).
My elbow (not exactly elbow i suppose, but arm muscle) and my right thigh's quadricep has maden me crazy.
Never had these problems, but yesterday i pushed a lot of forehand and serves (my serves are becoming very strong, 2 aces never done before).
What tell after 12-13 hours of play ?
Control is the main feature that i love, i can decide where to put the ball and the ball will go there.
Still some problems with backhand, but i'm learning how to use better, my forehand is very good and now i'm trying to push it harder to see if it is still controllable, and i think it is so.
Slices are hard to receive like 1st serves when they are in the field, i'm learning how to give more power and when all the steps are perfect my 1st serve is really damn fast.
Lately i'm using lot less the topspin, i need to train it before to use and usually we have few time for that for now.
We are growing like number of players, we could be in 6 tomorrow, so we can try also a tournament
Anyway my Pro Tour Lite 630 is coming, i suspect in 2 days, and i would like to try something lighter, cheap and arm friendly.
I was thinking about synthetic gut like Gosen Sheep Micro o Super Micro.
I don't know if it is better doing hybrid or not.
If someone has something to suggest, i would like to stay cheap, i saw also some Gamma gut, i think to use always 16G strings for now.
Please someone that is using them let me know how long they last and how is the feeling.
I like control but also direction, if possible some topspin (but before i will have to learn).
The PT Lite 630 would be lighter, but i will have to add some weight (it is head heavier) but i suppose that i will reach about 320 grams so 20-24 grams less than PT280 so i would have less pain on the arm, so i hope.
I can remove the full cap on the PT280 in the future so i would recover 8-10 grams, anyway any hints are welcomed
Why don't you try a poly that you like in the mains like your Xcel at 54lbs, and a synthetic gut like micro sheep (gamma isn't the best in my opinion)
in the crosses at like 52lbs. This will give you spin, control, and comfort. Don't forget no need to string too high, unless it's too hot. The pt280 isn't really a 98sq in head, it's more like 96sqin
The caps add 10 grams, so once you remove them you will have a more headlight racquet and also 10grams less, around the 335g mark.
Infact i was thinking to try several things:
The temperature is around 36 celcius when i play then go lower, we play in later afternoon (around 5:00 pm up to 9:00 pm)
1a) Wilson Poly Pro 1,35mm 15g on mains at tension around 55lbs - 25kg
1b) Ashaway Liberty Synthetic Gut 1,30mm 16g on crosses at tension around 53lbs - 24kg
2) Gosen OG Sheep Micro 2 1,28mm 16L or Gamma Synthetic Gut 1,30mm 16G on mains and crosses around 56lbs - 25,5kg / 54lbs - 24,5kg
3) any other suggestion
I'm not expert but i would like to try several strings with this racquet and the PT lite 630 that is coming (i suppose i would get it tomorrow at max), so i would like something cheap and durable.
I also would like to know if someone has tried synthetic gut on mains and poly or mono on crosses and if it could be a good choice for the PT280.
I'm thinking to remove the caps, maybe i can cut them with a knife until i get the new one, is it easy install the grommet ? In the while i will order some grommet without caps, there is a better version of the cheaper LiquidMetal (LM) Radical MidPlus (MP) that i can use on the PT280 ?
thanks for any advice

Installing grommets is easier rather than removing old ones according to stringers here... I would leave it to them rather than risk damaging them with a knife. Syngut mains is more popular as a cross as stated above, I also think poly mains will last you longer. Try syn gut in a full bed, you may like it. Gosen feels too stiff in full bed for me, and also lack of spin / control.
So do you think i can mix 2 synthetic guts, like Ashaway Liberty with Gosen OG Sheep Micro 2 ? Which on mains and which on crosses ? Or if you have other advices
For the grommet i will do making the job to the strunger if he will do.
I don't see the point of mixing two synthetic guts ? My favourites are prince duraflex and gosen og sheep. I am not sure if I know anyone who has used two different synguts... Give it a go, will be interesting!
Gosen will last you way longer than ashaway, so I would put the more durable in the mains which is Gosen. Ashaway I think is softer so crosses seems logical. Ashway plays good for the first two hours according to users... Gosen will last way longer, maybe it is better full bed of Gosen ? If you have the string try it out, it may work for you..
Only two hours ??? I would like to go cheap to spend less money, but if they will last 2 hours, i will have to change every week ?
Ok i will try someother synthetic gut.
I could begin to test the Gosen in full bed and see how it works.
I don't know. I never tried.VS, do donnay pro one accept CAPs?

Ok i got my Pro Tour Lite 630,
here the info i got:
Lenght: 68,5 cm (like the PT280 that i have)
Weight strung, with grip and overgrip: 305 grams (the PT280 with grip and overgrip strung weighes 344 grams, so i have 39 grams to reach that target, but i want to try to stay lower 10 grams if possible)
Frame width: 21-22mm, i don't have a caliber (the PT280 is 20mm)
Balance: 39-39,5cm (the PT280 is around 32cm) here i will need to fix these 7-8 cm.
That overgrip green by head is really awful, i removed it with the grip under it and i discovered it has the same size of the PT280 i have.
I was thinking to add a leather grip (maybe Gamma 25 grams) with an overgrip on it by Head Black Xtreme Soft (8,5 grams), in this way i will move a little the balance, then i will have to add some weight on the buttcap, silicone or lead tape, i don't know, i will have to verify.

It is in a nice condition!!
Yep it was, like the PT 280, i was very lucky to find them in these conditions and for the money of a pizza both
