The current Madison Square Garden is located atop the busy Penn Station railway hub some 10 blocks or so from the original sports venue at Madison Avenue and E. 26th Street.
I was a Dashing Dan commuter on the Long Island RR, who made my way into Manhattan and work five days a week from Port Washington on the North Shore of Long Island. On cold and/or wet days, I subwayed the remaining distance to the office all underground. On nice days, I walked the 12 blocks.
My most memorable night in The Garden was a Queen concert on the "We Are The Champions" tour but I saw quite a few other great acts there and even got to see a couple of NY Rangers hockey games courtesy of a Czech-born coworker with season tickets.
My most memorable moment in Penn Station happened due to a delay in service back out to LI. A platform level bar was packed with stranded Dans and Danielles so I moseyed in and wound up at a table next to a guy telling jokes rather badly. I offered a better funny tale, which agreed with the pseudo audience enough that I was immediately asked for an encore. Forty-five minutes later and several free rounds the better for my time and talent, I made my way to the right platform for the next train out and returned to my usual anonymous persona. I did get a phone number hastily scribbled on a cocktail napkin from a cutie pie Danielle who liked my dirty jokes and smiled like a Billy Joel song character so I didn't remain totally anonymous for long.
God, I wish I had known Sewretch back then...would have made for a career path like Seinfeld or Larry David!

When I was a kid, my father was stationed in D.C. and my mother took me to NYC to visit an uncle. We took Amtrak to New York, and I am pretty sure we arrived at Penn Station. I remember being confused by all the escalators and levels, frightened by all the chaos, and trying to find the local train. My Mom told me about Madison Square Garden, and I thought about this when I later watched the Masters between Lendl and Becker.
Coincidentally, I just found my collection of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" in a box of DVDs. NYC is too much for me, while I liked living in Los Angeles. I think I will watch a few episodes.

@Mike Bulgakov is the anti-Woody Allen, preferring L.A. over NYC yet he hates The Evil Dodger Empire and USC. To be Randy Newman, one must love everything about The City of Angels.
I played many an evening on the same Supreme Court carpet (rubberized mat not like carpet at all) pulled up from MSG after the Masters in January 1979. My teaching buddy bought it and had it trucked out to the Long Island estate's indoor tennis barn he was granted use of for more than a decade. This building was nestled in the back woods of Henry Phipps' 160-acre estate in Westbury. We played a lot of evenings there after lessons were done and would relax afterwards with a brewski or three. One night, just less than two years later we were watching Monday Night Football and I was just about to leave at the end of the game when I heard Howard Cosell interrupt the call of the New England/Miami contest to announce John Lennon's death.

L.A. has some nice areas. If you are west of the 405, the pollution isn't too bad as you usually get ocean air. I lived in Venice, Santa Monica, Brentwood, and Malibu, worked at studios in Culver City and Burbank, and played tennis almost every day at UCLA, so I mostly saw the good side of Los Angeles. Burbank usually had nasty pollution and traffic, but it wasn't a big problem.
New York is great, but too hectic for me. I have UCLA connections and cheer for them when they aren't playing Cal, but USC and the Dodgers are both evil empires...

Today, there's a California baseball team fan dining a couple of tables away and he's also saluting MikeB with a cap from the Giants, the arch enemies of The Evil Blue Empire from down South.

^^ Mike is not a fan of the Trojans but I guess he isn't a fan of the Blue Devils either. Could he be a fan of the Columbia Lions? I'm pretty sure Woody Allen is a fan because AFAIR at least 3 of his movies were filmed on campus and Natasha Lyonne was in it.

Recently went through a big Adidas bag full of barely used tennis shoes, found a pair of Diadora Boris Becker shoes still with some red clay from Denmark in the early or mid 1990s, and there was an unopened pack of Trojans in one of the shoes for reasons unremembered...

I worked across the street from Grand Central Station in the beautiful Chrysler building. Many a lunch and after work evening was spent in its beautiful interior instead of dashing through it on my way across town.

Our friend @r2473 went to the Rose Bowl this past January to find a great joint serving delicious dishes of bacon and to cheer his Iowa Hawkeyes to victory over Stanford. There was a sciFi parody film with Tim Allen in the Early 2000s. Pretty funny. Saw it with friends in west los angeles and went to canter's (ffax) afterwards for some matzo ball soup. Met the girl from a jeans ad with a partridge family song. Memorable night.

Kurt Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse Five" is a personal memoir that weaves into the novel's plot his real experience as a POW in Germany assigned to bury victims of the Dresden fire bombings carried out by RAF and USAAF war planes on St. Valentine's Eve/Day, 1945. There were so many victims that the POWs were called back and German soldiers with flame throwers replaced them in the dreadful but necessary task.
