Roger Federer All Backhand Winners Australian Open 2017 Final

Back in my playing days, I always used a one handed backhand. They were considered out of style for awhile there, people were saying the one handed backhand was a big disadvantage to have. So I'm glad to see this :)

Look at the point at 2:21. Man, Nadal was but a shadow of himself. Old Nadal would have reached that ball with ease.

Maybe. But it wasn't just slow Nadal, it was Roger taking that shot ridiculously early, so he didn't even have to hit it near the line.

Wait, seriously??? He only hit 14 backhand winners out of his 73? What's the number of points that were ended with his backhand? Because I remember him ending a lot of points when he hit the shot. He's probably got at least 10 more if you include forced errors.

That's how the entirety of the match was for both players. If you compare this to the 2009 final, you wouldn't believe it was the same two players until you realize that both were 8 years younger.

But this is what finals between the two would've looked like if they were mere mortals instead of the greatest duo of all time. And they'd still probably be good enough to early about half the titles they have and be in the category of all time greats.

Yes, but there were aspects of Fed´s game that were better in 2017 than in 2009 (namely, the serve, with Fed having higher 1st serve % as well as winning more first and second serves in 2017 than in 2009). But that´s not true for a Nadal. 2017 Nadal appears to be worse than 2009 across the board.

It's funny that this is still believed by many in this day and age, when the person who has the most slams of all time is a 1 hander, the man tied for 2nd place has a 1 hander, and Wawrinka who won 3 slams in the last 3 years is also a 1 hander. I will never switch!

It was the best I've seen Roger hit the backhand in a long time, maybe ever.

Even without hitting 50 winners from that side his backhand was so strong Nadal could not really pick on it like he used to and that is a big part of why Federer won this match. And of course Fed going for his shots and being aggressive :)

Man, Mirka's reactions to some of those shots, especially the DTL FH winner to end the 26 shot rally, are just awesome.

To think, she's been there to see every one of them. Man.

bravo! awesome video!

According to my notes he got exactly 14 forced errors out of Rafa with his BH. At the time I was putting together the video I didn't know how many BH-winners he'd hit so I counted the forced errors as well, in case I'd have too few winners. Turned out 14 was plenty though for the video. :) But to truly show how strong that wing was that night one would have to see the forced errors as well because those are almost the same as winners.

Fedgasmic clip, thank you.

My pleasure!

I could not enjoy the match while watching it live as I was nervous and hoping Federer does not commit error. Now I am relieved and watch it peacefully. Thanks for the video.

Have to say, I wasn't expecting that little pause where it said "5th set, this is where the fun begins." Made me laugh. :D

I swear, that match made it looked like his backhand was his better wing.
Yo........

Tell me why at one point in the 5th set Nadal abandoned attacking the bh and started attacking the fh

The last time I saw that was the 2010 AO when Murray got burned by so many Fed short angle bh shots, he started attacking the fh in the third set lol

I can't imagine how Nadal must have felt. Over a decade of the same tactic working like a charm, only to find that on this day, the BH just wasn't breaking down.

I heart the Frisco burger

Hardee's menu has changed a lot in 20 years, but they still have the Frisco

Their thickburgers are so good. Lots of guilty-pleasure burgers too like the Philly and The Chili Cheese. I haven't had them since moving to Orlando, can't find one.

One handers are a beauty. Specially the Down the line bullet.
Sadly the weakest part is return which gets exploited.

Same here. As a Fed fan I honestly could not enjoy one minute from the 4th on, I was so tense... It all felt so awfully familiar when Nadal got the 4h and broke in the first game of the 5th. Making this video was like therapy I guess :)

:D I thought it was fitting.

I enjoyed that thanks for the effort in putting it together

Yeah, maybe he though going to the forehand is the best choice. Choose the lesser evil that time.

yes 1 handed is fastest...

2 hander is clumsy but because of age of slow surfaces they thrive today.

However this will reset again depending on technology, people are hitting harder, they don't need 2 hands. Look at Wawrinka.

Mirka is a much better supporter than Xisca. In tough moment when their partner lost a point, Mirka was tense but encouraging while Xisca was shaking head and hopeless. May be it's due to the fact that Mirka was a pro tennis competitor before.
