Drakulie that is a huge takeback. That's beyond Guga-esque. Do you frame many balls on your backhand? Be honest here. Maybe you just wanted to impress for the camera and hit it really hard.

Huge takeback?? Not at all. Maybe it is the camera angle that is making you think that. This was a backhand I hit cross court. My take-back is average. And no, I do not frame "many" balls, or at least not more than the average player. Don't play that much anymore either. Maybe if I play more, I will frame more balls. LOL

If you would allow me to critique your backhand a little bit.

It seems to me that:

1. You drop your other hand from the throat of the racquet just a bit too early, even while the racquet is still in its full takeback position. You really should try and keep holding the throat of the racquet with the other hand until the racquet starts moving forward. You'll likely get more consistency and accuracy this way.

2. It seems that you hit off of the back foot quite a bit which means your weight is moving backwards instead of forward. You may want to try and step into the shot some more and transfer your weight from the back foot to the front foot during your stroke. This will take timing and good footwork in getting into the proper position to be able to step into the shot but it will give you more power, consistency, and it'll be less likely that shots will fly up or long on you.

Anyway, just some kindly suggestions. ;)

Thanks BP, and Phil for he comments. I never really noticed that (#1). That will be a tough change, especially since I do not play that much anymore, and have been doing that since, well,,,,,,,,,,I first started playing in the late 70's. LOL

I suppose Phil does not "agree" with #2, since he did not quote it. Anyway, I do step into the ball. It may be the angle from behind that does not show this.

Drak, if you check out the very first BH in the vid, your front foot is in the air. Minor footwork issue on that shot, but in the rest of the strokes front foot is down and weight appears to be shifting forward.

Definitely work on getting that trailing hand out of your pocket. All in all, a very nice shot.

Apart from drak's left hand and hitting off the back foot.....I don't like how the head of the racket is pointed downward when he makes contact. Looks like potential for wrist and elbow problems. He even does it on high backhands (from an earlier picture). Probably his way of getting topspin. My bet is that he misses a lot into the net when he hits backhand tops and drives.

i went last night to the royal albert hall blackrock masters, one word brilliant!
well done tim, he won 7-6, 6-4 and played brilliant, i predict a good year for tim after seeing him today, served and vollied pretty much everyserve and did it well, mark philippoussis played very well too!
it wasnt what i thought it was going to be 1 set each and loads of exhibition stuff, it was just a really tough work out for both of them!

the royal albert hall was amazing, the perfect indoor court!

definently going next year!

the only downer, the people there (What a load of snobs):)

''there was group of snobs as i would call it, giving mouth to most of the players throughout the night, pat cash made me laugh when he gave it back, what a legend!
anyway at the end of there match, the annoucer came out and pretty much cained these blokes terrible, and said to one of them if he think he can return marks serve which this bloke thought was 50mph he can try but for £500.00 the man aggreed and came down, philippoussis served at half pace and still aced him 3 times! later on the man challenged tim to a couple of serves for another £500.00 tim agreed, and taking the p**s tim turned his back and said go on then serve some serves!''

is that your camera you use, if so what type of camera is it, the reason is cause the only camera i usually use is my sony ericsson k800i camera phone, i now want a better camera so if you can help please! i just want to take pictures without being dissapointed when i get home and upload them to my computer!

when do we get to see some of your tennis photos, or even your local tennis courts?

Thanks for the input. As I said before, I never noticed it. It is amazing the little details a video camera picks up, that otherwsie you would not notice. Even a coach would not notice this unless he is standing behind you. I have been hitting that way since the late 70's when I started playing. At this point in my tennis life, and with how little I play, there is no way I will be able to change that habit. All-in-all I have never had problems with my backhand, and this detail of releasing my left hand "too early" has never effected my play (accuracy/control/power/spin).

No, I agreed with #2, though you didn't hit off the back foot on every shot...not sure why I didn't comment on that other than the fact that maybe hitting off the back foot on both sides is fairly common these days and people seem to be comfortable with it.

You may hit a mean backhand with the stroke you have now, but try keeping your left hand on the throat until contact and then "separate" your arms like a bird taking flapping its wings...you never know, as good as you think the stroke is now, there's always room for improvement. This may-or may not-be the ticket.

I agree I do see the pros doing this a lot these days. Both one and two-handers.

Okay, correction, very shortly before making contact with the ball. Approximately (it's varies a bit among most players) at the point when you're starting to bring the racquet up at the final stage of your loop-your hitting arm is beginning to extend out in front of you, and the arms are separating. Probably not the best explanation, but if you can check out the stroke in a full-length mirror, you'll see.

Its usually at the very bottom of the backswing (specifically towards the bottom of the "U shape" your hitting hand makes, as per Bungalo) where the hands begin to separate. If you slow-mo pro 1handers you'll see at the bottom of their backswing that the racquet is practically parallel to the baseline (as a result of the unit turn) with their non dominant hand still on the throat of the racquet.
