Prince Phantom

Had another hit with the Phantom last night. I'm starting to warm up to it a little bit with topspin groundies. I was able to hit groundies that kicked up ~5 feet with topspin and had my hitting partner making contact above his shoulders. I was able to get a little more depth and weight on the ball. Still not on par with my PO7 or GSP though. The added weight to the head helps a lot, but I would still want to add another 5g's to further increase the stability and plow through. Not a big fan of the flex when volleying. I don't have much of a backswing when I volley, so I've come to prefer rackets that are a little stiffer. Not a fan of how this racket hits slices either. The flex is most apparent with slices and volleys IMO.

The racket serves pretty well. It's a very whippy racket and it's very easy to accelerate into the ball. Once again more mass in the head would help and put more weight behind the ball. I felt like my kickers kind of sat up a bit and my partner said the ball wasn't as heavy compared to serving with my normal racket.

Regarding the paint. I think it's an improvement from previous ported Princes. The paint doesn't feel as high quality as the PO7, but it is definitely improved from past Prince PJ's.

I noticed that too. I got used to serving with it. 1st serves fairly great with a continental and an eastern bh grip. On my slow paced but high spin kickers I got nice net clearance but the ball didn't kick as high as I would like.

Hi Guys,

I bought two Phantoms a couple days ago. At first I made a mistake - normally I was playing Prince Tour 100 16x18 strung with Volkl V-Torque 1.28 at 53/51 lbs, but I had last set of 1.18 and decided to string the new with 1.18 (green one). So, after first session of hitting is hard to say for me... hard to compare Phantom 100 and Tour 100. Definitely, despite the lower power level of Phantom (775 vs 825) you've more power - it's easier to generate deeper shots. I feel it's because different material which Prince used to make the shaft (higher RA factor). Next week I'll string the other one with V-Torque 1.28 at 53/51 lbs and write sth more.

I just think prince is in trouble. I just asked TW In another post if they have plans for any new releases and none were in radar for prince.

That would seem to be the consensus right now. The hope is that the cash infusion from TW will resolve the supply issues all their vendors now have. Once they pay their factories the stock sitting on the docks can find their way to market. That needs to happen before any new designs surface IMO.

After Phantom then what? I heard a rumor of a textreme graphite 100 but who knows now. Was hoping for a textreme 98 tour.

what's the source for the assertion of a cash infusion?? For all we know TW's role may be limited to things like promotional considerations. One puts in cash if one gets equity in return, and I haven't seen any indication of that.

This information has been out since about the time of the Indian Wells tournament. It's factual and well documented from reliable sources and echoed in other threads on the same discussion board. Check it out.

no, only speculation has appeared here about what the nature of the relationship between Prince and TW might be, and nothing has been said about whether or how much financial support one party may provide to the other. If I'm incorrect, please post the details.

I have been playing the Phantom exclusively for about a month now. However, last night I went back to my Wilson Pro Staff 6.1 Classics for a couple of sets of doubles. The two racquets are very different, that's for sure. I ended up having a little bit more difficulty transitioning back to the PSC, than I did a month ago when I picked up the Phantom. Honestly, I missed the Phantom. I agree, it can use a little bit of lead in the hoop, but I was definitely missing something in the feel that I had already gotten used to.

I re read the review in tennis magazine on the phantom and have a renewed interest. My strikes are effective but I'd like a higher launch angle and some more comfort. I think I'm going to buy one when they're available.

Can anyone comment on the trajectory and spin potential both topspin and slice?

I found the launch angle at a moderate height for my game. Generally playing with an 18x20 and it was def higher but I was able to flatten out the shot or hit low trajectory shots with it. Comfort was pretty good too. BH slices I felt the racquet needed more weight to have that penetration and skid.

Have you ever hit with EXO3 Tour? Does Phantom come close to it in terms of comfort?

Spin potential was good for topspin with an average launch angle. Nothing extreme or super loopy.

Needs more weight for slice and you really feel the flex of the racket with slice. I'm not a big fan of super flexy rackets, so I wasn't a fan of how this racket hit slice.

Comfier than your Angells then?
Close with an edge to the Angell. The flex on the Angell seems more uniform where as I felt the flex on the Phantom was mostly in the hoop. This surprise me seeing how thin the throat was. That is my take on it.

Meanwhile the DR 98+ and SV 98+ look mighty tempting on paper; impure thought! - impure thought! Must bang head to rid the demons...AAGGHH!!!

Yup, they will. And we will see it here on TW.
Any insight into the health of Prince in North America? I've been between three different types of Prince frames over the last three years, and I can't leave them due to the superior feel of Prince. I.E., I'd hate to have to hedge my bets... and ultimately go to another..

Not sure about North America. But, Prince's twitter account has been active over the last few days. They also re-tweeted a shop in England that received a shipment of new frames (looks like the Warrior 107, the TT 100, and another model that I can't quite make out.

Sad to see how prince decreased in size, and the doubt about the continuity of their products. I am using a 100P right now, but I really wanted to see exactly the same specs with string pattern 16x18.

Prince will still exist. TW is taking over distribution.

At least with things looking relatively healthy for Prince in Japan it's much more likely that whatever product is released globally - or at least outside of Japan - will still be 'genuine' - rather than some made under licence/Prince in name only type of situation.

I picked up the Prince Textreme PREMIER 110, which TWE has had for awhile. If the ports have inserts he trouble with the strings eating into the frame should be solved.

huh. interesting frame

my locals shops have all cleared out their prince inventory and sent it back to the manufacturer.

I have a Phantom and measured the unstrung SW at 300 and the strung SW at 327 (no OG or dampener), strung with Poly Tour Air 1.25. Unstrung SW on throat is 295.
Poly Tour Air in that racquet must be about as forgiving a set up as you could get with full poly - unless you can handle the Tour esp 98/savage banana. I've got a couple of my Equipes strung with Cyclone Tour mains and Air crosses in the forties - very forgiving for poly.
