Roger Federer should retire now and save himself the embarrassment.

Roger Federer is done. His career might as well be over. He has lost on his best surface to a 40 year old after taking a 2 month break to rest. Federer won't make it to the second week of Wimbledon. His victory at the Australian Open was just a fluke. I don't see why he has to keep playing and ruin his legacy. He should withdraw from Wimbledon and retire so he isn't embarrassed at his best tournament and on his favorite surface by some journeyman player.

It wasn't a fluke. It was...

He should, he should?

Why should he?

He could, but he damn well decides for himself how long he wants to keep playing!

After AO17 and the 18th slam, his mission was completed. Of course i want him to win Wimbledon, but after winning a slam and two Master at 35y, nothing he does after that will ruin his legacy.

I've never been a Fed fan, and ever since he turned 30 I've wanted/expected him to retire. In recent years I have developed a grudging respect for him, despite the loonier factions of the Fed fanbase trying their best to make me hate him just as much as I did when he was hoovering up major titles in his early to mid 20s.

I hope he carries on for as long as he likes, as what he's doing is bloody amazing. He's an absolute joy to watch, and whether you're a fan or not, there will be a massive void left in the game when he decides to call it a day.

Lol, a fluke beating four top 10 players at 35 years of age, three of them being five setters and beating his old-time nemesis from a break down in the fifth set in the final.

Fluke my ass

If AO is a fluke, then IW & Miami is a fluke as well? Winning one slam and 2 MS-1000, the 2 biggest 1000's of the year, back-to-back, starts to be a lot of great results to be a fluke don't you think? Perhaps the OP is a fluke himself?

Grass hasn't been his best surface for years.

He's the clear favourite at the USO but I'd only put him as slight favourite for Wimbledon and anything can happen there.

Today was a nice gentlemanly gesture letting his friend and more senior player on tour win against him in his native Germany before he retires. That's all it was.

Fed already won several hard court tournaments this year, AO a fluke? Come on.

(Just saw your name, now it's making sense the ridiculous thread haha very funny).

He needs matches under his belt.i don't like the though of not having that match play after such a long layoff

????

He made the final there in 2014 and 2015 as opposed to only one USO final in 2015. Of course it's still his best slam surface!

Could not agree more with this assessment as a non-Fed fan.

He won the AO (not a fluke he beat a lot of really good players before he won) plus sunshine double, if he can do all that at 35 I think he still has some other great wins left in him, we'll see

How about PEDs?

Not saying he did them or that I even remotely believe it. Just tossing out ideas on what COULD ruin his legacy from here on out.

Match fixing? Cheating on Mirka/sexual assault/domestic abuse? Paying island witch doctors to try and voodoo Nadal's knees away from him so he can actually have a shot on clay? Joining a cult? Joining Scientology? Being a JB fan (or whatever artist you dislike and/or find distasteful)? Being in a movie Nicholas Cage decided to take part in? Being in a transformers movie? Being in a Michael Bay movie? (Yeah I clearly ran out of ideas a long time ago as only the first 3 seem reasonable.)

Fed lost to some nobody in Dubai and then turned around and won 2 Masters back to back!

Fed is just superstitious that he needs to lose a match here or there and just wants to make sure it happens at low tier events.

Tommy Haas played great, and feels comfortable on the grass in Stuttgart.
He beat Federer before at Halle in 2012 on grass.
Obviously, a tough first round for Federer. Haas's 302 ranking is deceptive because of his injuries, and he is certainly not 302 on grass.
This was a perfect match for Federer to get ready for Wimbledon.
Federer is not going to lose sleep over losing.
Hey, how about a wild card for Tommy Haas for Wimbledon given he is retiring?

I think people have been saying this since 2011, but the thing is Roger Federer seems to love tennis like nobody else. A couple of weeks ago Aljaz Bedene was being interviewed on TV and he was talking about how last year he had fallen out of love with the sport, and had to find his way back to it again. After the interview was over Fabrice Santoro pointed out how Federer is at heart still like a teenager new to it all. He loves being in the locker room around the guys, he loves the travelling, the practicing, walking out on court, etc. As long as he feels that way there is no good reason for him to give it all up. The pride of his idiot internet swarm should not be something he has to consider.

If AO was fluke, then what about Indian Wells and Miami. I just hope Fed gets in the same groove on grass as he was on hardcourts

2008 actually, although I'm pretty sure Suresh made a "Fed should retire" thread way back in 2007.

I think it's a combination of the factors, his love and passion for the game, adoration of the crowd wherever he plays etc. but Nadal being close to his slam count also might be a factor. I hope to see Fed pull a Connors and plays until he's 40, would be epic.

The pride of his idiot internet swarm should not be something he has to consider.

Fed's internet swarm may be guilty of many things but wanting him to retire isn't one of them. It's mostly Sampras and Nadal fans that have been calling for his retirement for years, heck Suresh alone made like 10+ "Fed should retire" threads.

He pretty much servebotted his way to both finals.

His ground game has been better on HCs for years. 2012 was the last time he had an elite grass return game.

No one asked OP to write downt he stuff he keeps talking in his sleep. Pretty sure OP was sleep talking after 2012.

More like, Fed and Nadal should save themselves from embarrassment like OP.

Yes, I once found about 6 or more of surehs's "Fed should retire" threads, 10 could be a close figure (I forgot to count).

Sadly, I bumped a few and they got deleted. So now we are down to only three or so. You are right about 2007.

Federer should play in the Masters category along with suresh and the other senior citizens.
So embarrassing that he insists on playing with 25-30 yo juniors and racking up slams at 36.
