Steve Johnson puts Tomic's lack of effort into Context.

Just watching Steve putting all his effort into this match at the moment against Cilic and his amazing efforts at the French against Coric, just days after his father passing away really puts Tomic's disgraceful attitude into context. Hope Steve has continued success on the circuit because I love this guy's drive and will to compete even after a huge emotional shock after his father dying.

Great post, TJ. Darren Cahill was saying almost the same thing, contrasting Stevie's will and fight as opposed to Tomic's pathetic lack of effort. Cahill really trashed Tomic.

The takeaway I have about Tomic is he was stupid to say what he said. He's not the first tennis player to get bored and tank. I remember Connors saying that Nastase tanked the Wimbledon final. Nastase was a head case too.

So he did what he did which is what a lot of other players also do from time to time. Don't talk about it, though, ya idjit!

Bernie needs to go join the Nadal academy in Mallorca. Uncle Toni can teach him some work ethic and kick the air out of his big head. Perhaps there might just be some use for that talent then...

No help for him, probably he is lost since the day he was born. Maybe genes, I don't know.

Having an upbringing like Tomic did with that awful father of his likely did white a number on him, and I think people tend to either ignore or forget that. With that said, Tomic certainly isn't doing himself favors speaking so frankly.

Exactly! It's not a crime to go out onto the court and be like, 'I'm not feelin' it.' But don't confess it at the presser. That's just dumb. Talk to your family, friends. Talk to a friggin' therapist if you're so unmotivated to do your job. But the fact is, you went out there. And you're getting paid. And you're supposed to be a "professional" representing yourself and in part, the tour.

Everyone b*tches about work. But when all you do is complain, no one wants to hear it. Man up, quit your b*tching, or do something about it . . . like quit and get a new job. That's how it works.

Your post actually made me felt for Tomic...if Tomic reads your comments, I am sure he will be crying behind the toilet door by himself thinking if only I had a dad like Steve that I care enough to make me love the sport and pushes myself through tough matches...

not sure it's a good idea... at least, for the moment, cheating is one of the (rare?) things we can't blame tomic for :confused:

PS: when i read the thread title, i thought it was about steve johnson's calling for a bit of mercy towards 'poor lil bernie' ! :p

Damn I missed that!

Cahill usually gives PC answers about his Aussie's pathetic effort from Nick and Bernie. I've been waiting for him to finally snap and stop covering up for them.

I do think the media needs to stop coddling and bringing up steve's father in every interview.

Give the man some space to grieve and play tennis. Stop bringing up his dad's death and how he was watching him in the same spot a year ago.

Media loves to milk that ****. Annoying.

One of the ways some people try to deal with grief is to work through it or take on more to try to avoid it...it doesn't work long term.

Yea I was never a Johsnon fan but even before the tragedy I really appreciated what a hard worker and competitor he was. Truly puzzling that people make excuses and cheer for the likes of bernard or nick.

The issue might be that Tomic does it more than "time to time," and in fact his entire career has been a low effort disappointment.

"Not feeling it" is not a crime, no. But tanking,
repeatedly, is not representing the sport well, whether he confesses to it or not.

Nastasse, indeed, was an idiot, but I can't believe that he would tank a slam final. But then, with him, anything crazy was possible.

I think Tomic doesn't try hard because he knows or thinks that he won't be that good even if he tried.

So he just tanks matches and says his heart isn't in it, because for some people it's better to reign in hell than serve in heaven.
