Nadal's backhand last night in Cincinnati

Did anybody watched his match against Gasquet? His backhand was on fire last night! Hitting through the ball and very aggressive. Sure, the positioning on the return wasn't aggressive but when rallying it was. We just have to see how well he maintains that shot throughout the rounds. Imo, this backhand of his right now is better on HC then I've seen all year. I would say it's up there near the level he was playing during the clay season.

Agreed - I feel a lot of people are ignoring he made the Australian Open and Miami final.....I know he has got most of his points on clay this year but not exactly awful on other surfaces either this year :)
And yet he won tournaments only on clay. And even there he lost in Rome.

It's freaky that Nadal has not won a title on HCs this year, and I think he is overdue...

He played like crap in the 2 later matches he played with Fed. Fed kinda blew him away in australia, but he should be embarrassed how lightly he still seemed to be taking Fed after that. A shame indeed, Nadal plays too well on HC to have the amount of titles on it that he does.

Backhand was money last night, needs to decrease the FH UFE but I liked the fact that he is going for it. I think that once the game he is trying to deploy here starts clicking on all cilinders, a game which is more aggresive than what he previously showed this year, he is going to be very tough to beat. Only guy I can see stopping him is Kyrgios in the QF, other than that I would truly be suprised

Nadal has 2125 points from HC and that is highest among all players after Roger Federer. So all suggestions that all points he earned are on clay are attempts by jealous haters to discredit his becoming no 1.

Don't think in AO Fed blew him away. Going in the 5th set he was favourite to win. All betting sites were counting on him big time. He was up a break too in 5th. It was just that Fed made some audacious shots which came off just fine and that made all the difference.

But I agree that his tame losses both at IW and Miami are difficult to explain.

I'm OK with Rafa winning Cincy as long as he does not win US Open ;)

How about both ;)

I just watched the match, finally.

His rally BH was just okay IMO, but he did hit some flashy winners off of it, so it looks better than it actually was; not to mention that his backhand was up against Gasquet's forehand, which is no world-beater.

It's good to watch, but I'd rather he applies more pressure constantly off that wing in his next match than hit a handful of flashy winners.

What match did you watch? Gasquet was attacking Nadal's backhand and Nadal replied even stronger making backhand winners to his forehand side. So yes, it was world-beater. The whole match he shot deep backhands.

I think he's saying that Gasquet's forehand is no world-beater :)

lol. You Nadal fans are ridiculous. Nadal played a poor match and Gasquet is just a very good matchup for him. The only reason he could possibly win anything in his current form is due to the current field. Really he doesn't look any better than at Wimbledon imo.

I didn't think Nadal played anything special. Gasquet was lame once again against Rafa, played right into his hands. Richard did rather well to win seven games IMO. I did comment in the match thread about some huge backhand stunners from Rafa, though the shot itself was just alright to me....

Comparing it to the clay season is a joke tbh, no way was it that good.

Exactly

That, and since Gasquet's forehand is so poor, Rafa's backhand looks better than it actually was.

The backhand was awesome during the clay swing. That last match, it was pretty good, but not incredible. I did, however, like the fact that he was trying to do more with the backhand, changing direction, and flattening it out down the line (FINALLY). It's a step (or two) in the right direction.

And he looked like the second best player at Wimbledon just like the rest of the season. So, it figures that he will do well on the hard courts

Thank you. Voice of reason. Beating up Gasquet's short, weak FH shots isn't anything to get too excited about.

What the OP failed to mention was the commentators said when asked before the match, Gasquet said he doesn't expect to ever beat Nadal in a match. So he basically walked out last night just playing to not get blown out.

To be fair, though, his route to the Miami Open final was Sela/Kohlschreiber/Mahut/Sock/Fognini. He even ate a bagel, freshly delivered by Philipp!

I'm not detracting from his achievements. You can only play who you are up against, after all.

But all performances need to be put in context.

Gasquet played atrocious. Don't raise your hopes , you will be disappointed come USO

There is a reason Nadal has won 1 HC major in last 7 years and no HC title for 3 years

I was shocked too. At least you'd expect the 'well, if I play great and he's off, I have a shot.'

Oh, the French.

Yeah. I mean, he's struggled a lot after all the injuries he's had over the last year so it would be undrstandable for him to not have the best of confidence, but come on. Saying things like these publically sends a bad signal imo. Maybe he's just saying it to put pressure off himself.

Watched the entire match yesterday and IMO Nadal is not at the level he was on clay and maybe even the first 3 matches in Wimbledon.

On the backhand, he did hit some flashy winners , but overall the backhand was ordinary by Rafa's standards. He was slicing a lot which usually doesn't happen when he is playing well. Gasquet hardly ever pushed Nadal wide on the backhand which is usually where Rafa gets into trouble. He was also late on getting to the ball and throwing up defensive mid court balls.

The forehand was also not firing as it was earlier in the year. He missed a lot of routine forehands. The winner to UFE ratio was bad. There were precious few off- forehand or DTL winners. His cross court fh was decent which pushed Gasquet back.

However the biggest deficiency was the return of serve. To be fair, Nadal should have broken Gasquet more than the 2 times he did. Several times Nadal just missed easy returns on breakpoints or gave a sitter return that sat up in the service box. Did not cost him Gasquet, but might be decisive in a tight match.

The 1st serve for Rafa was also not as fast Close to 112 mph average many times - which is low - even for him. He also had more double faults than usual.

This post is not meant to be critical. Nadal won the match handily. And he is not playing bad in general. But Gasquet is a really easy matchup for him given how far back the Frenchman plays and has no ability to step in and take time away from Rafa.

Overall, based on the scintillating form Nadal was in the clay season, his hardcourt performance is just ordinary. I was expecting 2013 level hardcourt form given how he looked early in the year. But it is clear he is nowhere close to that level.

Good news is that Nadal can only improve from here. So let's see how he does in the UsOpen. Based on the current form, it is likely to be a scrap in NY..

Interesting. Is is the same field Fed is said to be dominating or a different field?

Maybe that's because of inability of Gasquet to attack Nadal's BH with enough strength and angle. It's a no brainer that Gasquet is the easiest match-up Nadal could imagine - not good enough FH to put pressure on Nadal's BH + fancy cross-court BH only to be punished by Nadal's heavy left-hand FH topspin. It like a deadfall - whatever Richard plays, Rafa has a better answer to it.

And that's the salient point. Nadal is still standing back to Mars on the ROS. This will be exploited by any non-choking, decent player at the USO (if there are any left playing there).
I'm fairly certain any of Nadal's matches this tournament will be inherently better than this year's Wimbledon final.

How so? He had only 2 DFs LOL. That's actually normal these days and lower than his previous 2 matches (6 against Shapo and 4 against Coric). Good thing is he didn't DF at critical points to give his opponent BP/the break or in the the TB like in the matches vs Muller, Shapo, BCP at RG, Foggy at Madrid etc.

Agree with you on the ROS. He got away with it in this match but against guys like Kyrgios, Raonic, Isner, Karlovic... on HC he's gonna have troubles again. If my memory serves me right he only stepped up on 2nd serve return once at the end of the match! (And twice on 1st serve return :D.)

Shame Muller lost before he could play Rafa and raise the hope of many TTWers here ;). Honestly I want him to face the players that gave him nightmare so he can either fix his mistakes or make them again and lose again deservingly. He used to be able to get away with it most of the time in the past but not now, especially with his poor BP conversion throughout the year.
