Tennis is not in a great place right now, there are not that many big tournaments that have been won this year that have been won against especially impressive draws, the Paris Masters is rarely in an impressive state even in a good year anyway, and yet... Kyle Edmund since New York has been playing well, and usually only losing respectable matches to good players, Pouille just won a 500 last week, Verdasco knocked off the not unimpressive trio of Rublev, Anderson, and Thiem. That's not a bad draw.

It still stuns me to think how close Edmund was to stopping Sock in his tracks at the very first hurdle. He had already beaten Sock comfortably in straights in Atlanta back in the summer and seemed well on his way to to doing the same in Paris when he was 5-1 up in the deciding set. How he managed to choke away a lead of that magnitude against a guy he had already beaten comfortably earlier in the year is an absolute mystery but the fact remains he went out a 1st round loser and remains ranked #50 in the world whilst the guy he had on the ropes went on to win the event, win his 1st Masters 1000 title, break into the top 10 and qualify for the season-ending championships. Such are the fickle twists and turns of fortune in this game of tennis!

That Sock-Edmund match in Atlanta was funny. Sock was dominating Edmund, he was up a break like 4-2 I think, then there was some sort of timeout, plus Edmund took a medical timeout, then Edmund and Sock had a practice rally that lasted like five shots, Sock took a medical timeout to get back at Edmund's medical timeout, and by the time it was all over, Sock had lost all his momentum and Edmund won in straights. I'm sure Sock was thinking about that as he was about to lose again to Edmund.

It's not fair at all, sorry to tell you mate! Someone like DelPotro who has no Masters title or like Wawrinka who has only 1 title.
I remember one Masters event, I think it was IW '13, Delpo went through Murray and Djokovic back-to-back just to get to the final only to then play Nadal (who happened to play one of his best HC matches ever), eventually falling slightly short. He had a similar draw at the Rio Olympics: Djokovic, Nadal and then gets Murray in final. How unlucky can someone get? Why can't JMDP ever get these Jack Sock cheesecake draws?

It is fair. This Paris title was Delpo's to win. He should have beaten Isner (even Krajinovic could beat Isner), but instead he let Sock win the tournament.
