Okay. Still no thread for this match at almost the last minute, so I'm making one.

Rafa: After what happened to him at Roland Garros (an ankle injury), it would be really unfair if he was not here. I’m very happy to see him recovered and playing well. Hopefully he won’t play that well on Monday but he’s 100 per cent here and he deserves to be.

Goffin: We’ve played some good matches – on clay in Madrid for example was a good match that Rafa won and we’ll try and play another good match here. I’m sure I can play some good tennis against him. I’ll try and play some good rallies, be aggressive and make him run a lot. We’ll see, I have nothing to lose. It will be a good match.

Hoping for a good match.

Wonder why there was no thread til now? Maybe the fact that Goffin has not and cannot beat Raffi, ever.

No thread maybe because people think Goffin is Raffi cakewalk. Would love to be pleasantly surprised. UPS tape on knee, if it reappears, means nothing.

Depends on Rafa's knee and game plan, Goffin might very well beat him tonight.

Knee only matters to UPS where they sell the tape.

Nadal has never played Goffin or Thiem on hard courts so this match carries a lot of weight. Goffin is the more credible hard court player of the two, so he's got to play Rafa well. Really looking forward to all of these matches with Rafa.:D

In all seriousness, if Rafa still has knee problem, Goffin would beat him. This isn't clay where Rafa can play his C game and hope to beat a world class opponent like David Goffin.

I know it's just the first game, but right now it looks like Nadal is still in his Paris form. Goffin looks much better from the baseline (and his last shot was in), Nadal so far won only points by serve and umpire mistake.

If both keep this level then Goffin will win like 6-2 6-2. I think people on this forum don't realize how bad Nadal is indoors.

Do you even watch? Every third shot is an error. He is world number 1 because of his results on other surfaces. Indoors I feel like he is the worst of the 8 players in this tournament.

Rafa trying to emulate 2011 Djokovic . Djoker lost to Tipsarevic and Ferrer and barely beat Berdych in a 3rd set TB.

That group seems much worse than 2016 WTF group.

Goffin shouldn't have missed that FH on BP, but it has to said, only a handful of other players would've made Goffin work that hard to try and win that point.

It is still one player, before he had to deal with two. So while Fed will be fav in the match, should Nadal get through, he does not have Djokovic waiting for him.

WTF 2010 - Beats Djokovic, loses to Federer
WTF 2013 - Beats Federer, loses to Djokovic

I know Federer is his nightmare indoors.

I think he needs to stop listening to the crowd that tells him he has no weapons because I think it feeds into his mental fragility. Suddenly you feel your window for winning is shrunk when you buy into that so that's a no go.

Funniest thing is that if Federer and Nadal will meet here (it is possible only in theory) then Federer fans will say it was peak Nadal.

Why isn't Nadal trying to return serves like he did in 2013. Used to stand closer to the baseline and just push the ball back deep.

He played a great match to beat Djokovic in MC. And here he completely outplays Nadal so far, even though it has a lot to do with Nadal's bad form.

No. But we will point out that Nadal 2017 is playing WAY better than Federer was in 2013 when he met Nadal 4 times (vs only once in 2015 when Nadal really was playing terrible).
