Andrew Castle: 'It doesn't look like Andy Murray's hip is good'

Former British tennis player Andrew Castle wasn't thrilled with what he saw from Scot Andy Murray on Tuesday. (I posted this in the wrong place, should be general discussion, apologies)

The 30-year-old clashed against the great Roger Federer in a charity match at Andy Murray Live.

It was the Scot's first public appearance since his Wimbledon quarter-final defeat suffered to American Sam Querrey.

Murray didn't play any ATP events since The Championships as he is still recovering from a frustrating hip injury.

Murray's movement was clearly still not at its best as he lost to Federer 6-3 3-6 10-6.

Murray later teamed up with his brother Jamie against Tim Henman and Mansour Bahrami at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow.

"From the evidence of my eyes, it doesn't look like his hip is good at all," Castle told BBC Scotland."The way he's moving, changing direction, he's clearly uncomfortable.

"I was disheartened to see that he hadn't made much progress in terms of the way he was walking between points - more than four months on.

"I'm not trying to be negative and I was delighted to see Andy back out on the court, he's given us so much joy over the years.

Four months have passed since the Wimbledon loss as Murray has just less than two months to recover in time for the Brisbane International.

"If that hip issue wasn't there, he'd have another five or six years because he is such a thorough professional," Castle added.

"If we've seen the last of him at the top level, then that's a real shame."

This is really sad news. I've said many times that from my experience of working with people with injuries and disabilities (and having one myself now), coming back from hip and back problems to be a high performance athlete is next to impossible. I'm sure Andy has tried everything. That being said, there is life after tennis, and Andy seems like a bright fellow who has invested his money well, and he will move on to other amazing work. Wishing him a good journey.

Murray always coughs, grunts, screams and hisses when he's moving on court. If you think he was taking any risks he wasn't comfortable with, you're wrong.

99,9% of the time this guy doesn't know what he's talking about. This could be one of the few cases when he's right. Hip injuries are the worst, man. If you can't move after 4 months of rest you need a miracle to remain relevant in the game. If Fed played that exho seriously this would've been a double bagel and I'm not exaggerating.

We'll see what happens until January but I wouldn't be optimistic if you're one of the 7 Murray fans.

After reading the posts here, but before watching the video, I was thinking, "hmmm is it possible that he moved awkward because he's just being extra careful on his hip even when it was actually fully healed or mostly healed?"

After watching video, unfortunately I can't convinced myself that that's the case. Sad to see him like that.

Not trying to be funny or ironical (with AO coming), but some of his movement kinda reminds me of a kangaroo hopping. He was probably trying to protect and avoid pressure on certain movements/landings. Really sad to see any Pro athlete in this condition.

Exho against Fed on his condition is probably not good idea, even if it's just an exho.

I hope I'm wrong.

Doesn’t seem like it. Mommy issues, and I read an article that talked about how he rolls with a very deep entourage. Kinda a mini tomic. Suppose the brits and Scots like him enough that he can live off of endorsements for the rest of his life even if he blows his money

This is terrible news and I still hope Andy comes back, but does this make anyone else appreciate Nadal a little more? The fact that he is the ultimate grinder in tennis and the way he has used his body physically and still going strong is just defying nature.

Wrong. Federer at 36 blows doors off anyone in the "appreciation" column. Rafa is only a year older than Andy and his demise may occur at any moment.

Sorry I respect you but I’ve made my feeling on this clear several times.

There are several players having the best success of their careers at later ages, for one thing.

And Rafa has had to play a WAY more physically demanding style than Fed it’s not even close. Nadal is definitely older than his actual age in tennis terms.

Again this isn’t directly aimed at you, but I am beyond sick of people acting like Fed having success at his age is the greatest thing in sports history. Not to mention I hate how people are acting he made some huge “comeback” this year when he never really went anywhere. He was the clear 2nd best player of 2015 and knocked on the door at Wimbledon last year. I said before the AO even started that the 6 month layoff was the best thing that could have happened to him and he would win. And of course I got called crazy for it. Who ended up being right?

Believe me I’m no VB member I’m losing respect fast for sellout Rafa and his antics but sorry I respect you but I needed to vent.

Yeah not to mention it’s a known fact he spends quite a lot of money on public image consultants and agents.

I used to kinda like him but I’ve seen the light the last two years. Imo Djokovic is the only semi-genuine of the Big 4. The other three are smokescreens.

A thousand dollar wrist watch wearing polo shirt wearing staid suit wearing fake Federer friendship having 180 degree PC cutout image having sellout, yes.

Andy spends lots of money on public image consultants and other fluff.

Fed, well, has always been Fed.

Even to an extent Novak has lost his edge but at least he is still largely the same as he’s always been. He doesn’t care about PR beyond a certain baseline level. The others are VERY uptight about their image though.

Great stuff :p

Keep digging up the dirt.

And yes, even Ringo Murray's a walking product/ company like the other 3.

P.S. : I loved how Fed's back "got better" by playing intense exhos against the nextgen MUGS. This year's been shady as f*ck. All that Fedal bromance was as fake as an old school politician kissing toddlers.

Excuses begin. Remember last time the excuses were made non stop after his every major loss during 2014-16. The surgery was supposed to "kill" Murray's late career till he won Wimbledon. :D

I remember how "broken back" Murray outaced Fed at Cinci 2015 :D So much for a FINNISH player.

Everything. Where on earth do you get the idea that " it’s a known fact he spends quite a lot of money on public image consultants and agents."?o_O
It’s in the book Strokes of Genuis (granted Werthiem isn’t useful for much but that is one pertinent fact he does get in).

And you believe this guy to be pertinent with his 'facts'? What sort of image does he think Murray is trying to create that he doesn't believe accords with reality?
