Dominic Thiem: 'Novak Djokovic was the best I ever played'

'I think now it's against Rafa on a clay court, it's unbelievable', said Thiem, who lost to Nadal twice in 2017 and got the "revenge" in Rome. 'But I think the best ever I played was Djokovic, when he was in his best form, one and a half, two years ago.

It was, I think, almost impossible to beat him. Maybe the best tennis somebody ever played.'

It's got to be so hard to answer these type of questions.

The difference between playing the all-time greats when they're on is negligible. It's not a matter of how much they dominate you, it's just a question of how they go about it. So I can see how peak Novak would be the most daunting for a ball-basher like Thiem since Novak's defense neutralizes his only weapon on all surfaces.

Peak Novak on slow HC, peak Federer on fast HC and grass and peak Nadal on clay. That's it.
Thiem against peak Federer on a fast court would be fairly one sided.

Thiem against peak Sampras on a fast court might well result in hospitalization. There's a reason guys with Thiem's skillset ran like prey animals away from Wimbledon in the 80's and 90's.

Playing a peak Djokovic, Federer or Nadal would probably be the most frustrating thing ever attempted. Djokovic and Nadal can be absolute walls on the court while Federer always seems to be 2 strokes ahead and knows where the point is going before he rips a perfect winner.

I feel like there really isn’t a difference between either of those guys when they were at their peaks because you were probably going to be wiped off the court. Djokovic was the most recent peak though so I can understand why a young guy like Thiem would say that.

Hehe, jepp.
Players themselves of course know who they think played best tennis against them.
It was the same thing in here when Rafa said his experiences.
I tend towards the less fanatic approach. Murray fed rafa and lil nole are all helluva players. They would all beat the crap out of each other peak prime pre cum decline whatever bull **** lunatic excuses that are derived.

Lol this was about djokovic. First post was to degrade thiem and the news source. If said newz and thiem said fed is god fed fans would have lauded thiem and said newz source.
I’d rather trust someone who was actually around back during 03-07 when Fed was at his explosive best.

lol @ the inclusion of Murray.

Tennis likely increases in overall level incrementally as time goes on. Djokovic in 2015 might be the highest aggregate level anyone has ever demonstrated - though clearly not the highest level on specific surfaces e.g. clay or grass.

Your responses in this thread have shown you're just as butthurt as any Fedfan though ;)

Well I was merely pointing out who the most indomitable beasts on a tennis court are IMHO. If life on Earth was on the line and I had to pick someone to play a match and save us tho, it’d certainly be peak Claydal at the French Open. Dude was the Boogeyman.

Answer makes perfect sense coming from Thiem. Djokovic at or near his best is probably the toughest for Thiem from a match up standpoint.

If the shoe fits man. Anyone that spends a significant portion of their time complaining and generalising about another group of people is probably in need of some lotion :D As far as being a bully goes, at what point does giving back becoming bullying itself? Bit of a philosophical question, I'm sure Pepe has the answer :p

I’m very happy sir :) looking forward to this AO properly getting going.

Keen to see how Nole will play after his layoff.
Ditto. Not sure how anyone can stand up to the royal highness yet. Maybe by wimbledon lil nole might be able to mount a viable offense to dislodge the master. Jesus christ i hope so lol.

He speaks of Djokovic's Earth's Mightiest Warrior form...
