Federer plays Kohly after Bemelmans. Here's a lesson for Roger how to beat him

After Bemelmans Federer will face Kohlschreiber! Roger needs to watch these highlights of their 2009 Wimby clash to get inspired on how to beat him again!

Not that we should get ahead of ourselves, but Roger already beat Kohl last year's USO and WITH a semi-sluggish form from the back problem.

And if he's really all that concerned, Roger can always have a quick phone call with Sir Andy and ask how he did this:

Everyone always gushes about the Fed and Gasquet BH being the most beautiful, personally I've always thought Kohli's BH is the sweetest of them all. Kohli has some of the most beautiful groundstrokes in the game - just didn't have that little extra 5-10% to battle with the ATG's in his era.

By far one of my favourite to watch in the ATP. I prefer him over ugly Shap/Thiem any day - he actually plays an all court game.

Well, this just proves you need a lot more than just perfect technique to win. You also need tactics, strategy, fitness, mentality.

Love Kohl's game too, but when it is "off" just the tiniest bit, he goes from beauty to pure trash. One of the biggest gaps between floor and ceiling of any touring pro I have seen.

I think mostly its been a mental thing with him. And that FH just never had the oomph to penetrate through the court.

But yep, true, need a lot of things to come together beyond form. Mostly the spirit of a champion I should think, however that may be defined.

So true. I remember quite vividly his RG2009 win where he trashed Djokovic all over the court in three sets. Amazing when he was in form during his prime. Beautiful tennis.

Yes, Federer needs to get some inspiration against Kohli as he usually struggles against him...
I know... this hand wringing his beyond belief. Fed has a 12-0 H2H against Kohli and they've had one tight match only, in Halle in 2015. Kohli has won exactly three sets from Roger in a dozen matches.

Kohli has a nice all-court game, solid one-handed BH, good fitness, decent speed around the court.... He's like Fed.. only not nearly as good... and although he can bang in the occasional service winner, he doesn't have a big enough game to beat Fed on hard (especially indoor hard). If he wins, it would be a gi-normous upset.

This hysteria over this easy draw is hilarious. People literally trembling over a journeyman like Bemelmans is comedy gold. And Kolhi? Give me a break. Fed is the greatest indoor player ever, yet some are acting like he has to face indoor ATG titans.

@Hitman's Gurl :)

for some reason i remember getting super emotional after that match, i dunno why but i expected Fed to lose in straights and he just turned it up and went super sayian

shame about the final :( but that semi is something special for me

If that was the semi-finals you're talking about, then I have re-watched it a few times, because the level of play was just so high.

NOBODY was going to beat either of them, except for those two that day.

I think Federer served an absurdly high 1st serve %, something insane like 80% for the match, and Murray returned all of them with interest.

it was the semis where Murray showed one hell of a grass court display and still lost in straights

Yep, that's the one. I know people say the previous Nadal/Federer Wimbledon Finals was the greatest match ever played, but if you take out the crowd and circumstance, it had nothing on the overall high quality of play of the Federer/Murray semifinals.

Wouldn't be so sure, Sampras, Becker, McEnroe etc. indoor tennis used to be a bigger deal before. Even Lendl was a beast indoors.

Bemelmans is match fit, having come through qualifying, and should be a good match.

Fed has to show up this week if he wants to avoid a repeat of Donskoy. But I have a feeling that he will. He seems motivated.

I realize this, but aside from the hysteria over Roger's draw (which borders on cakewalk), I don't understand the hysteria over whether he gets #1 in Rotterdam or not. Of course I want him to get it on Saturday, but it's quite likely he'll regain it in April or May anyway. Nadal defending 4600 points is a tall task at nearly 32. Unless Roger loses third round at both IW and Miami, he's set himself up to overtake Nadal soon enough when Nadal falters. If it's in Rotterdam, fabulous! But it's no big deal if he (and his fan base) has to wait a couple months longer.

I suppose I'm just a classic handwringerer. :D I feel like this is his shot to be #1 and that we shouldn't count our chickens regarding him getting it later in the season.

Just watch as "injured" Nadal defends all his clay points anyway, possibly with interest.
I'd bet good money on it tbh

Yeah, Nadal doesn't really need to play all that great to trounce the current field on clay. Don't think it will be with interest though, he'll lose before the final again in one of CC masters to save up some energy for FO.

That natural surfaces are just open season for Fedal. They're the only players who really have any idea what they're doing out there in terms of playing the right kind of game for those surfaces. Most players get by (badly) on clay with a hardcourt game, and a few get by okay on grass by servebotting.

Wimbledon is Federer (and previously Murray and Djokovic too) vs. the servebot guys, and RG is Nadal vs. the same guys as usual, but with a huge surface advantage to him.

It's getting boring. The best tennis has been on HC for years now.

Pretty much.

Fed's still in more danger against servebots though as they can atleast force a tiebreak or two occasionally. Outrallying Nadal from the backcourt for 3 sets at the FO however? Hell's gonna freeze over before that happens.

Kohli is a baby Dimitrov, whose a baby Fed.

On that basis Kohli is an unborn Fed.

Kohli backhand is far superior to Dimitrov backhand, mainly for it's reliability. It is just so consistent.

That being said though Dimitrov overall is a better player.

The vibe I get from Kohlschreiber is as if he know's his job is to lose to better players. He never seems to upset when he loses, he almost always shrugs, smiles, and laughs it off as if it's just another job well done.

I don't understand this idea that Rafa is going to have a tough time defending his clay points. Right now I think it's more likely he defends his 4 clay titles than Roger defending his 2 hc titles. Who is going to step up and take their shot at the king on clay? Thiem? Goffin?

But most of the board seems to be with you on this, I'm surprised that I'm in such a small minority.

The thing is that last year Nadal's resurgence was absolutely insane. It was basically perfect bar his loss to Thiem. No one really expected him to be back to his absolute peak, but everyone either got a taste of what it was like, or at least witnessed it in action. I think this year some of the clay court threats will perform a lot better against Nadal having last year's form to strategise with. Also, Nadal at the moment is less physically prime than he was last year. If that carries onto the clay season that is a major problem for Nadal.

I think Thiem, Goffin or Schwartzman are the biggest threats on clay for Nadal at the moment. Federer could be a threat if he plays - but who knows what his clay court game is like these days. Stan, Andy and Novak aren't much threat either as all of them are suffering with some form of injury which likely won't be remedied in full by clay court season.

Much longer than me actually. Fed is definitely great indoors but hard to say how great, one thing I'll always hold against him is that he supported to abolishment of carpet as a surface.

Same here. I was also sad when he supported carpet abolishment. I think he paid for that. He would have had a good edge against Novak Djokovic, if the WTF s were on that.. I think it would have been like Cincy for him in the match up against Novak Djokovic..

He wasn't thinking longterm maybe, at a time he still had the edge from the baseline against all of the tour save very few players. Would have loved to see Fed-Novak match-up on carpet, it was such a unique surface.

Wasn't the issue with carpet that it supposedly caused lots of injuries? Has that ever been backed up by data?

i know you've heard this already but PLEASE re-upload the Fed-Murray 2015 Wimbledon Semis that match will remain in my heart for the rest of my days
Hey mate...I think you're mixing my channel up with someone else's. I have not yet made highlights of that match! Maybe I will in the near future
